Overview
The Consumer Lending Underwriter is responsible for evaluating and underwriting consumer loan applications in accordance with NWFCU’s established lending policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements. This role focuses on making timely, accurate, and well-structured lending decisions by analyzing creditworthiness, verifying documentation, identifying risk, and supporting portfolio quality. The underwriter serves as a subject‑matter resource to lending staff, promotes appropriate loan products that add value for members, and ensures full compliance with Credit Union policies and federal regulations while contributing to strong member experience and overall lending performance. Responsibilities
Makes timely, accurate lending decisions with a focus on response time, application volume, and loan quality Analyzes, evaluates, and approves, denies, or counteroffers consumer loan applications in compliance with NWFCU Lending Policy Performs detailed credit analysis, including review of credit reports, income, assets, liabilities, collateral, and overall ability and willingness to repay Conducts credit investigations and identifies discrepancies or red flags, including potential fraud, using credit reports and third‑party fraud prevention tools Structures loan approvals to strengthen the Consumer Lending portfolio while maximizing member relationships and mitigating risk Identifies and promotes appropriate ancillary loan products that enhance loan structures and provide value to members Maintains expert knowledge of documentation requirements for all consumer loan types Communicates lending policies, procedures, and product information clearly to loan officers and branch staff Provides guidance on Credit Union and CUSO products and maintains working knowledge of GreenPath Financial Wellness Tests operating systems and updates to core lending software, identifying and reporting issues to management Maintains professionalism and sound judgment, including in challenging situations and fluctuating workloads Works independently under moderate supervision and may mentor junior loan officers Maintains flexibility in work schedule, including extended hours as business needs require Performs additional duties as assigned Remains cognizant of and adheres to NWFCU policies and procedures as well as regulations pertaining to the Bank Secrecy Act (BSA) Qualifications
Required
High school diploma or equivalent Minimum of 5 years of experience as a Consumer Loan Officer, or at least 2 years of experience in consumer underwriting. Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret credit reports, financial data, and supporting documentation High level of accuracy, attention to detail, and commitment to quality and compliance Excellent customer service skills with a member‑focused approach Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex information clearly Demonstrated professionalism and ability to interact effectively with members and staff at all organizational levels Proven ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive member and Credit Union information Knowledge of NWFCU policies, procedures, products, and services Ability to work effectively both on‑site at the Herndon, VA headquarters and remotely from 8am-4:30pm and 9:30am-6pm as needed, and to participate in monthly Saturday rotation schedules from 9am-1pm Understanding of regulatory and compliance requirements, including: Bank Secrecy Act (BSA), CPI provisions, CTRs, and Suspicious Activity Reporting USA PATRIOT Act / Customer Identification Program Truth in Savings Military Lending Act Privacy regulations Lending regulations including ECOA (Reg B), Truth in Lending (Reg Z), and Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) Completion of all required Regulatory and Compliance training as assigned Preferred
Proficiency with consumer lending industry software and terminology; experience with MeridianLink/Loans PQ strongly preferred. Proficiency with the DNA core account processing platform from Fiserv Additional Compensation
