Job Description
Seasonal position starting in April 2026.
Purpose of Position To operate ARRC Gift Shop, selling and maintaining inventory control of retail items.
Duties and Responsibilities Responsible for the daily operation of ARRC Gift Shop. Duties include opening and closing the store, setting up and putting away displays, setting up advertising displays or arranging merchandise to promote sales, operating cash register, computer inventory tracking system, and credit card machine. Gift shop’s cash bank is maintained. Responsibilities include processing check‑out, balancing end‑of‑day accounting paperwork involving cash, credit card, and internal sales; preparing daily deposits; receiving change orders; reconciling and preparing daily sales reports. Responsible for inventory adequacy: replenishing supplies, completing daily inventory sheets, submitting to the Gift Shop Warehouse; retrieving new stock, verifying items are labeled correctly; tracking out‑of‑stock items; updating shop inventory record to support spot inventory audits. Assists the Inventory Technician in processing gift shop orders made online or via phone, pulls and processes sales, bags, addresses items, and submits to the Warehouse for mailing. Enters data into database and prepares tally of data from onboard surveys on customer satisfaction, comments, etc. Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related duties as needed.
Knowledge Required Basic knowledge of accounting procedures, inventory control, ability to total prices, collect cash or card payment, make change. Skill in operating cash register, credit card machine, 10‑key by sight, fax machine. Ability to reconcile daily sales reports, prepare deposits, maintain balanced cash funds. Basic computer skills: computerized cash register and inventory control system, word processing, spreadsheet, e‑mail software. Ability to communicate effectively and resolve problems with minimal supervision. Skill in setting up advertising displays or arranging merchandise to promote sales.
Supervisory Control Performs under direction of Gift Shop Inventory Technician and overall supervision of the Manager, Passenger Depot Services, following procedural guidelines. Work reviewed for timeliness, accuracy, organization.
Guidelines Established gift shop operational procedures ensuring accountability of sales, inventory, safeguarding change fund and cash, and balancing end‑of‑day paperwork.
Complexity Ensures gift shop is stocked, organized, displays accurately priced tags, inventory kept up‑to‑date. Secures stock, accounts for all sales transaction reports, resolves inventory and accounting discrepancies and cash machine issues.
Scope and Effect Accuracy in handling cash, merchandising pricing, inventory directly impacts ARRC income.
Personal Contacts Employees, supervisors, tour guides, general public, independent travelers, travel agents, tour companies, and operators.
Purpose of Contact Sell ARRC Gift Shop retail items and answer inquiries about online sales and mail order procedures.
Physical Demands May sit or stand extended periods; lift up to 50 lbs.
Work Environment Moderate risk; requires safety precautions; moving displays, unpacking boxes, organizing stock, working around trains. Seasonal from April to September.
Minimum Qualifications
High School diploma or GED
1 year of front line customer service
Skill in operating cash register, credit card equipment, 10‑key by sight, and fax machine
Basic computer skills using computerized cash register and inventory system, word processing, spreadsheet, and e‑mail software
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
