About the Role

The Director of Coffee and Production oversees all aspects of coffee quality, sourcing, training, and production operations across The Boy & The Bear.

This role leads the coffee education team, roasting operations, production team, and wholesale program, ensuring seamless coordination and execution that aligns with the company’s standards and values.

Responsibilities include strategic coffee sourcing, vendor relationship management, product quality control, and the continuous development of coffee education programs. The Director of Coffee and Production also oversees production workflow and supports teams in optimizing warehouse operations and overall efficiency.

This role plays a key leadership position in maintaining the integrity of our coffee program while supporting the company’s continued growth.

The Director of Coffee and Production holds primary responsibility for maintaining and elevating product quality, which is one of the three core pillars of the company.

Through careful sourcing, rigorous quality control, effective training, and strong production oversight, this role ensures that every coffee served or sold by The Boy & The Bear always reflects the standards that define our brand.

Qualifications of this Role

Candidates must demonstrate proven and verifiable experience in the following areas:

  • You understand and value, or have previous experience working with brands that prioritize calm elegance, attention to detail, and the level of intentional care required to create a refined and sophisticated coffee experience.
  • Minimum of four (4) years of professional experience in the specialty v industry, including roles involving coffee extraction, roasting, quality control, sourcing, and coffee program management.
  • Strong knowledge of coffee sourcing, roasting, and brewing techniques, with demonstrated ability to maintain consistent coffee quality standards.
  • Strong proven experience leading and mentoring teams, including supporting baristas, educators, and production staff in maintaining high standards of coffee preparation and service.
  • Strong experience conducting sensory evaluation and cupping, including the ability to assess roast profiles, flavor characteristics, and overall coffee quality.
  • Strong organizational and operational skills, with experience managing multiple workflows such as production planning, product launches, and purchasing schedules.
  • Ability to analyze product performance based on sales data in order to guide decisions regarding product selection, pricing, and inventory management.
  • Experience working with wholesale coffee partners or multi-location café operations is strongly preferred.
  • Strong communication and training skills, with the ability to clearly write and communicate coffee knowledge, product information, and preparation standards.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with a high level of accountability, strong work ethic, and sound professional judgment.

1. Green Coffee Strategy & Sourcing

Lead the sourcing and purchasing strategy for green coffee while maintaining alignment with company budgets, financial goals, and brand values.

The Director develops and maintains an annual purchasing plan based on store sales and projected demand, ensuring transparency with the executive team. This role manages supplier relationships, negotiates contracts, and evaluates coffee performance across retail channels to guide purchasing decisions. Pricing and negotiation strategy, product selection, and launch planning for retail coffee are also overseen the profitability and strong product performance at stores and online level.

2. Training & Team Development

Oversee the coffee education department and support the development of training programs that strengthen barista knowledge and coffee preparation standards across all stores.

This role ensures that training materials, product information, and educational resources remain clear, accurate, and consistent. The Director works closely with the coffee educator to support both internal staff training and customer-facing educational experiences such as coffee classes for our customers. The goal is to build a knowledgeable team capable of delivering a consistent and confident coffee experience.

3. Quality Control & Standards

Maintain the quality standards of The Boy & The Bear’s coffee program across all locations.

The Director works closely with café leaders and coffee educators to ensure consistency in roast profiling, espresso calibration, extraction, and overall drink presentation. Regular store visits support ongoing evaluation of coffee preparation, milk quality, and beverage presentation standards. Customer feedback and internal tastings serve as additional tools to monitor performance and continuously improve product quality across the company.

4. Leadership & Industry Engagement

Lead and support the teams responsible for coffee education, roasting and production, warehouse operations, and wholesale development.

The Director works to foster a culture centered on quality, teamwork, efficiency and professional growth while ensuring that each department operates effectively and collaboratively. This role also represents The Boy & The Bear within the specialty coffee community through industry events, competitions, and professional relationships that support the company’s long-term growth.

5. Product Management

Oversee the development and rollout of new products and re-orders across the company, including seasonal drinks and retail offerings.

The Director manages the annual calendar for seasonal releases and works with internal teams to develop recipes, new product concepts, and launch strategies. This role also monitors inventory levels for retail products, merchandise, and packaging to ensure timely reorders and consistent availability across stores and online channels.

6. Inventory and Warehouse Oversight

Provide oversight of production and warehouse operations to ensure efficient workflow across roasting, packaging, inventory management, and distribution.

The Director works closely with the roasting and warehouse teams to maintain organized systems for purchasing, inventory tracking, and product flow. Maintaining balanced and “safe” inventory levels while supporting accurate and timely fulfillment for stores and customers is an important part of this responsibility.

7. Website Product and Customer Care Management

Oversee product updates and launches across the company’s website, ensuring that new coffees and products are presented with clear, accurate information and engaging content.
