Responsibility

The Director of Finance reports to the Superintendent of Schools. The Director of Finance oversees five employees in the Finance/Business Office and collaborates with the Food Services and Transportation departments to ensure accurate financial accounting. This role manages a service‑driven operation and a team focused on all financial matters of the district, including financial tracking and reporting for general fund, grant and special revenue funds, revenue tracking and reconciliation, certified and classified payroll, student activities, non‑tax levy funds, budget development, and related state and federal financial reporting.

Performance Responsibilities

  • Assumes responsibility for the implementation and observance of all School Committee policies and regulations by the finance staff.
  • Develops a systematic annual fiscal plan to make budget assumptions for both short‑term and long‑term capital and operational expenditures.
  • Creates a descriptive budget document that displays proposed expenditures in a clear, easy‑to‑read format, consistent with community and state mandates.
  • Supervises and controls the expenditure of budget appropriations and the collection of revenues in accordance with the Committee’s goals and objectives.
  • Reports regularly to the Superintendent and the Committee on matters relating to budget revenue, budget expenditures, and balances.
  • Identifies, pursues, and administers other avenues of fundraising and philanthropy, including competitive and noncompetitive grants, tuition and fee‑based programs, advertising and marketing efforts, and corporate and alumni fundraising, as directed by the Superintendent. Serves as liaison to the Beverly Education Foundation.
  • Completes all state reports, including the End of Year report.
  • Understands MUNIS permissions and trains new employees on MUNIS.
  • Prepares records and provides financial information for the District’s annual and special audits.
  • Keeps the Superintendent informed of the business department’s activities and issues and, when appropriate, makes recommendations for improvement or solutions.
  • Conducts financial analysis to support the development of collective bargaining strategy.
  • Oversees district procurement and manages the preparation and execution of all school department bid proposals, contractual obligations, and vendor contract negotiations.
  • Serves as liaison and resource person with all committees and the Department of Education for major school building projects; attends meetings as required.
  • Provides support and guidance for principals and other budget holders in the discharge of their responsibilities.
  • Works with city officials and the Superintendent to identify potential areas of consolidation of school department and city services.
  • Examines non‑instructional functions to identify potential cost‑savings for the district.
  • Identifies potential cost‑saving measures within the financial aspects of the district (e.g., copiers, building cleaning, telephone systems).
  • Recommends to the Superintendent, or their designee, appointments, assignments, promotions, and dismissals of professional personnel within the department.
  • Supervises the use of public school buildings by the community, within the constraints of school committee policy.
  • Supervises business office and payroll staff.
  • Performs other duties that may be assigned by the Superintendent of Schools.

Position Type: Full‑time
Salary: $150,000 to $160,000 Per Year
