SMYTH COUNTY COMMUNITY FOUNDATION is a nonprofit organization based in Marion, Virginia, dedicated to improving the health, wellness and education of residents of Smyth County. Principal Function

The Director of Finance and Business oversees all financial and operational functions of Smyth County Charitable Fund and associated organizations, supporting the Executive Director and Foundation Boards in executing the strategic plan while ensuring all systems and resources align with the foundation's mission and goals.

Key Responsibilities

1. Strategic Leadership

  • Ser ve as the chief financial strategist, advising the Executive Director and Board of Directors on financial planning, policy, and risk management
  • Lead, coach, and assess staff across all operational areas
  • Develop and implement finance and operational policies, procedures, and manuals
  • Foster cross-facility and department collaboration to better serve our community and to align resource allocation where shared resources can be a benefit
  • Manage daily financial operations: general ledger, donations, payroll, accounts payable/receivable
  • Lead Facility Managers in annual budget development and management
  • Maintain chart of accounts with proper internal controls and segregation of duties
  • Prepare monthly/quarterly/annual financial reports for each entity with variance analysis and commentary for Facility Managers, Executive Director, and Board of Directors
  • Prepare and present financial reports, dashboards, and strategic analyses
  • Serve as staff liaison to the Finance Committees.
  • Bi-weekly payroll processing and all receipts verification
  • Perform monthly bank reconciliations and coordinate external audits and 990s
  • Review/approve all expenditures and contracts over $5,000
  • Ensure tax compliance and prepare annual 1099s and donor statements
  • Support fundraising and endowment initiatives
  • Provide support for new projects as they arise, coordinating the finances

3. Business Oversight (working directly with facility managers)

  • Facilities: Oversee building maintenance, security, and third-party vendor contracts and management. Develop and implement custodial, maintenance and other shared services for SCCF
  • Human Resources: Manage recruiting/onboarding procedures, employment policies, and benefits for all SCCF entities.
  • Office/IT: Manage office operations, Administrative Coordinator oversight, and IT vendor coordination
  • Banking: Coordinate with the local bank, oversee online banking, and credit card processes
  • Risk Management & Compliance: Oversee enterprise risk management, insurance programs, and internal controls to safeguard foundation assets. Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, and internal policies.

4. Professional Development

  • Stay current with financial/operational/HR technologies and best practices

Qualifications

1. Required

  • Community Servant aligned with SCCF mission and values
  • Bachelor's degree in business, finance, accounting, or related field
  • Five years proven track record of leading finance and business functions, with experience in nonprofit environments strongly preferred
  • Skilled in financial analysis and oversight, with significant experience managing budget structures
  • Proven team leadership and strategic implementation abilities
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • High integrity, confidentiality, and professionalism
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and overall adaptive to new technologies
  • Well versed in standard operating practices for all areas of finance and operational management
  • Ability to pass background, reference, and credit checks

2. Preferred

  • Master's degree or CPA or willing to acquire certification within 2 to 5 years
  • Experience with Sage Financials or similar software and foundation management systems

Accountability: Reports to Executive Director. Works collaboratively with Smyth County Charitable Fund and Smyth County Community Foundation Board of Directors, LWC and HHGC Management teams.
