
Director of Finance

The Director of Finance is a hands-on finance leader responsible for overseeing the organization’s financial strategy, systems, reporting, and compliance. Reporting directly to the CEO, this role plays a key role in budgeting, forecasting, audit coordination, grant and funding reporting, and financial process improvement.
While prior nonprofit experience is strongly preferred , the organization will also consider candidates from professional services environments who bring strong technical accounting, audit, and compliance experience. This role is onsite and offers room for growth for a senior finance professional ready to step into a Director-level position.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Planning & Strategy
Lead annual budgeting and forecasting processes in partnership with department leaders
Manage cash flow planning to support financial sustainability
Act as a strategic financial advisor to executive leadership and finance/board committees
Financial Reporting, Grants & Compliance
Prepare accurate weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports
Produce financial reports for grants, foundations, and funding partners
Ensure compliance with nonprofit and regulatory reporting requirements
Coordinate audits, including preparation, auditor interaction, and implementation of recommendations
Maintain financial records in accordance with GAAP and best practices
Accounting Operations
Oversee daily accounting functions including AP, AR, payroll, general ledger, and close processes
Reconcile accounts and ensure accuracy across financial systems
Manage banking relationships, vendor agreements, and treasury functions
Oversee and optimize financial systems (e.g., QuickBooks and related tools)
Cross-Functional Leadership & Process Improvement
Partner with department leaders to monitor budgets and track grant-related expenditures
Lead finance process improvements and documentation initiatives
Apply strong critical thinking to identify risks, inconsistencies, or compliance concerns
Operational & Administrative Support
Maintain financial and compliance-related documentation
Support onboarding and offboarding processes from a financial perspective
Ensure financial data aligns across systems and reporting tools
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
5+ years of progressive finance or accounting experience
Nonprofit experience preferred; professional services experience also considered
Experience supporting audits, compliance, and financial reporting
Exposure to grants, funding, or restricted funds strongly preferred
Advanced Excel skills and strong technical accounting proficiency
Experience with QuickBooks or similar accounting systems
Strong analytical, organizational, and critical thinking skills
