Job Description Classification Title: HVAC Mechanic, Entry-level

Classification Minimum Requirements: Works in Facilities Services at the University of Florida (UF). Support and assist with repairing, replacing, and preventively maintaining heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) equipment; refrigeration equipment; and cold rooms. Provide support services to other trades. May participate in the Facilities Services FaST Path Program. He/she begins the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) CORE. May participate in the NCCER HVAC Level 1 curriculum.

Work with higher-level HVAC Mechanics. Perform general preventative and minor corrective maintenance with oversight of a high-level HVAC technician which includes electronic and mechanical components; installation of HVAC ductwork, including flexible tubing and sheet metal construction; installation or repair of refrigerant lines; installation and recycling of CFC or HCFC refrigerants; installation or repair of electrical connections to HVAC components; with higher-level support, assist with and maintain, repair, replace, and preventatively maintain HVAC equipment, refrigeration equipment, and cold rooms.

Accomplish on-the-job training (OJT) - Learn campus buildings by names and numbers - Learn tools, equipment, and materials used in the trade.

Completes NCCER Core.

Enter maintenance data via the work order system for work requests (WR) and time. Provide support services to other trades (e.g., properly route or phase WR) as may be required for the timely and efficient repair of buildings and/or equipment. Obtain parts from Centrals Stores for assigned WR. Clean and maintain shop, work areas, and personal equipment.

Valid Florida driver license Required.

Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Refrigerant Recovery TYPE ll Certification (6 months post-hire).

Post‑offer health assessment Required.

Criminal background check Required.

Normal Work Schedule

9:00 PM - 7:30 AM Monday‑Thursday.

Total hours per week: 40.

Assist in emergency work (as needed).

Standby as required.

Position considered as Essential Personnel as defined by UF Policy.

Expected Salary $17.00 to $18.70 Hourly based on experience.

Required Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent.

Preferred Education & Training

Valid Florida driver license.

Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Refrigerant Recovery TYPE ll Certification (6 months post-hire).

Skills

Demonstrable skills necessary to solder refrigerant and water piping/tubing.

Demonstrable skills necessary to recover refrigerant.

Abilities

Ability to follow established safety practices and procedures.

Demonstrable ability to recognize the proper materials/equipment needed for a specific job and make necessary changes.

Demonstrable ability to read a service request.

Physical Qualifications

Ability to drive or walk to customer/trouble locations.

Ability to move or lift weights, such as ladders, tools, and equipment weighing up to 100 pounds with assistance.

Ability to work in attics, basements, crawl spaces, and similar places.

Ability to wear appropriate safety equipment.

Ability to climb.

Ability to reach above shoulder frequently.

Ability to kneel.

Ability to bend repeatedly.

Ability to work in confined area that may contain animals.
