About this Role Job Title: Designer - Civil
At QISG, the Civil Engineering Designer is a senior-level member of the drafting and design team, responsible for independently executing complex civil design tasks and leading portions of project design efforts. This role supports civil engineering work related to site development, access roads, grading, and drainage design for large-scale energy infrastructure projects, including substations and transmission facilities.
Working collaboratively with a multi-disciplinary team—including civil, structural, geotechnical, and construction professionals—the Designer leads design production efforts, mentors junior staff, and contributes to the development of civil design solutions, construction drawings, and specifications. This role focuses on advanced civil design tasks such as site layout, grading design, stormwater analysis support, and survey coordination. The Designer applies advanced engineering and drafting principles under the guidance of a Professional Engineer and exercises strong engineering judgment to solve complex problems.
What You’ll Do
Work on design aspects from project inception to completion on various transmission line projects.
Lead the preparation and revision of complex civil engineering drawings based on engineer and planner input
Oversee and process survey data into accurate base maps and surface models
Develop and refine site layout, grading, and drainage designs with minimal supervision
Support and perform stormwater design efforts and drainage calculations
Create and review vicinity maps, access plans, and detailed civil sheets
Utilize AutoCAD Civil 3D (or similar) to create, manage, and modify design models and drawings
Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior designers and drafters
Coordinate with survey, engineering, and construction teams to ensure design accuracy and constructability
Support permitting efforts, including preparation of civil plan sets and responses to agency comments
Perform quantity takeoffs and contribute to cost estimates
Participate in design reviews and ensure compliance with company standards and client requirements
Conduct field visits and support civil construction inspections as needed
Identify design risks and propose practical, cost-effective solutions
Manage multiple tasks and priorities across projects in a fast‑paced environment
Work a regular 40‑hour workweek, with overtime as required
Perform all other duties as assigned
What You’ll Bring
High School Diploma or Equivalent
10+ years of experience in civil drafting and design, with significant experience in site development, grading, and drainage projects
Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D or similar civil design software
Strong understanding of civil engineering design principles, including grading, drainage, and site development
Ability to read, interpret, and QA/QC civil drawings, utility maps, and survey data
Basic knowledge of the major components of transmission lines
Basic oral and written communications
Working in a team environment
Communicating effectively with co‑workers
Able to deal with ambiguity and ability to work independently, manage multiple tasks and determine priorities in a complex environment.
