Two-Year Grant-Funded Position (February 2026 – January 2028)
About Athens Wellness Clinic Athens Wellness Clinic is a free, nonprofit clinic dedicated to providing compassionate, evidence-based care to uninsured and underserved individuals in the Athens, Georgia community. We provide outpatient treatment for people living with substance use disorder (SUD), with a focus on opioid use disorder and co-occurring conditions including Hepatitis C. Our team uses a harm reduction, trauma-informed approach to meet patients where they are — supporting their journey toward health, stability, and self-determination.
About the Role Athens Wellness Clinic is hiring a part-time Community Outreach Worker to support a new mobile outreach initiative funded through the Georgia Opioid Crisis Abatement Trust. This role is central to our mission of expanding care to unsheltered individuals and others with barriers to accessing treatment. The Community Outreach Worker will staff AWC’s mobile outreach van, engage community members in the field, and serve as a trusted bridge between people in need and the clinic’s services.
This is a meaningful opportunity to do hands-on community work and directly impact the lives of some of Athens’ most vulnerable residents. There is genuine potential for growth as our programs expand.
Key Responsibilities
Staff AWC’s mobile outreach van and conduct regular field outreach to unsheltered individuals, encampments, and community sites with high rates of unmet need.
Provide community education about substance use disorder, harm reduction, and available treatment and recovery options.
Support Hepatitis C testing preparation and coordination in the field,assistingindividuals withnextsteps in care.
Facilitate warm handoffs to AWC and other treatment programs, ensuring individuals can access services with as few barriers as possible.
Conduct post-visit follow-up with individuals to support engagement and continuity of care.
Serve as a consistent, trusted, and non-judgmental presence for community members considering treatment at the clinic.
Connect clients to community resources that promote housing stability, safety, and long-term wellbeing.
Maintainaccurateactivity logs documenting outreach contacts, services provided, and referral outcomes for grant reporting purposes.
Represent AWC at community events, health fairs, coalition meetings, and other outreach activities.
Work collaboratively with clinical staff, the Executive Director, and other team members to support the clinic’s mission.
Qualifications Education
High school diploma or GED required. Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Public Health, Community Health, or a related field is a plus, but not required.
Experience & Skills
Experience in community outreach, harm reduction, behavioral health, or substance use services is preferred.
Comfort engaging with unsheltered, marginalized, or underserved individuals in community settings.
Lived experience with substance use or recovery is valued and welcomed.
Valid Georgia driver’s license and reliable transportation required (mobile position involving field travel).
Spanish language proficiency is preferred but not required.
Basic computer or smartphone skills for documentation and communication.
Ability to work independently in the field and exercise sound judgment in dynamic situations.
Commitment to harm reduction principles, non-judgment, and meeting people where they are.
Compensation & Terms
$25.00 per hour, approximately 10 hours per week
Two-year grant-funded contract (February 2026 – January 2028), funded through the Georgia Opioid Crisis Abatement Trust
1099 independent contractor basis; no benefits package
Work takes place primarily in the field (mobile van outreach) and at the clinic; independent travel required
Potential for expanded hours and role growth as AWC’s programming develops
