Technology Reporter
San Francisco Standard, San Francisco, CA, United States
The San Francisco Standard is seeking a reporter to cover technology in San Francisco and the Bay Area, from the big tech companies remaking the city to the startups, venture capitalists, and outsized personalities driving the latest wave of disruption. Working in The Standard's newsroom, you will have an opportunity to cover the world's most consequential technology ecosystem from its epicenter, shaping how our readers understand the industry reshaping their city and their lives.
You will develop comprehensive coverage that spans the technology landscape, including startups, key founders, investors, and operators, emerging tech trends, and the money flowing through Silicon Valley and into San Francisco's neighborhoods, economy, and politics. You will pursue scoops on the deals, ideas, and people that matter most, while holding a powerful industry accountable to the city it calls home. This beat puts you at the intersection of ambition, capital, culture, and consequence.
The ideal candidate has a deep understanding of the San Francisco and Bay Area technology ecosystem, including its major companies and emerging challengers. You will have a proficient understanding of business, capital, and funding dynamics. And you will have an eye for a colorful cast of protagonists, and the industry’s complex relationship with the city it calls home. You must possess exceptional reporting skills, a knack for feature writing, and a proven track record of enterprise journalism in a deadline-driven environment.
This is a full‑time, in‑office position.

Proven experience as a reporter, preferably with significant experience covering technology, business, or investigative journalism
Excellent journalistic skills with demonstrated ability in complex, technical reporting and translating industry developments into meaningful stories for general audiences
Broad understanding of the technology landscape, including major companies, startups, venture capital, emerging trends, and the regulatory environment
Strong network of sources within the technology and venture capital communities, or proven ability to develop such relationships quickly
Familiarity with digital publishing, audience engagement, and social media platforms
Understanding of data journalism techniques and comfort with technology tools for reporting and analysis
Preferred
Previous experience covering AI, enterprise software, consumer tech, crypto, or other emerging technology sectors
Deep understanding of venture capital, startup ecosystems, and the funding dynamics that shape the industry
Experience with public records requests, financial document analysis, and investigative techniques
Ability to profile and gain access to the founders, investors, and executives who define the technology story
Knowledge of San Francisco's relationship with the technology industry, such as the ways tech money shapes housing, politics, philanthropy, and culture in the city
Spanish‑ and Chinese‑language skills are a plus
This is a unique opportunity to cover the world's most important technology ecosystem from the inside, while helping shape the future of journalism and local news as part of The Standard, an ambitious startup.
The pay range for this role is $75,000 to $120,000. Actual compensation packages are based on factors that are unique to each candidate. We encourage you to apply even if you don't fit all of the preferred qualifications.
