The cooperative provides reliable electric service to approximately 20,500 meters across Clarke, Washington, Wilcox, and Monroe counties. Position Summary The Communications Specialist is responsible for planning, creating, and executing internal and external communications that support the electric cooperative’s mission, strengthen member relationships, and promote community engagement. This position manages print and digital content, social media, media relations, events, and special projects to ensure consistent, accurate, and timely communication with members, employees, and the public.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities Member & Public Communications
Develop and distribute member communications including newsletters, bill inserts, press releases, website content, and social media posts
Serve as a point of contact for media inquiries and coordinate press coverage for cooperative initiatives, outages, events, and announcements
Ensure messaging is accurate, clear, and aligned with cooperative values and brand standards
Publications & Content Creation
Write, edit, and design content for publications such as Alabama Living magazine, annual reports, brochures, flyers, and special publications
Coordinate photography and video production for cooperative projects, events, and storytelling initiatives
Maintain content calendars and manage deadlines for recurring and special publications
Digital & Social Media
Manage the cooperative’s social media platforms, including content planning, posting, engagement, and basic analytics
Assist with website content updates
Support video and short‑form content creation for social media and member education
Community & Youth Programs
Promote and help coordinate community outreach programs, youth leadership initiatives (such as Youth Tour), scholarships, and educational programs
Assist with event planning, promotions, and on‑site support for annual meetings and community events
Internal Communications
Support internal communications to employees, including announcements, recognition programs, and internal publications
Assist with employee engagement initiatives and service anniversary recognition
Brand & Creative Support
Ensure consistent branding across all communications and marketing materials
Coordinate with vendors (printers) as needed
Maintain photo, video, and design asset libraries
Administrative & Support Functions
Assist with crisis communications and outage messaging as needed
Perform other duties as assigned to support cooperative operations
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, Journalism, or a related field preferred
Experience in communications, marketing, or public relations; electric cooperative or utility experience is a plus
Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills
Ability to communicate technical or operational information in a clear, member‑friendly manner
Experience with social media platforms, basic graphic design tools, and content management systems
Photography and video skills preferred
Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines
Comfortable working independently and collaboratively with staff, members, and community partners
Working Conditions
Primarily office‑based with occasional evening or weekend work for meetings or events
Occasional field work, including outdoor photography or event support
Valid driver’s license required
