Graphic Designer (part‑time, 17.5 hours/week) The Graphic Designer supports the College of Computational, Physical, and Mathematical Sciences by creating thoughtful, high‑quality visual materials for both digital and print communication. This position requires an experienced designer with strong technical skills, a keen eye for visual storytelling, and an ability to translate complex subject matter into clear, compelling designs. The designer will also mentor student employees, uphold University brand standards, and contribute to strategic communication initiatives that elevate the visibility and impact of the college.
What You’ll Do In This Position Graphic Design Develop high‑quality creative designs for print and digital media, including newsletters, brochures, booklets, posters, web graphics, social media assets, and event materials
Manage multiple projects simultaneously and consistently meet deadlines
Receive, interpret, and incorporate feedback from the dean, associate deans, department chairs, faculty, and other stakeholders
Create graphics and media used in presentations to campus leadership, external partners, and donors
Contribute to the development of strategic communication efforts aligned with college initiatives, events, and priorities
Prepare files for professional print production, ensuring accuracy and compliance with printer specifications
Mentor Student Graphic Designers Provide guidance, art direction, and feedback to 1–2 student graphic designers
Teach design best practices, workflow processes, and creative problem‑solving techniques
Support student designers in achieving faster turnaround times and higher‑quality deliverables
Graphic Design Standards, Compliance & Innovation Stay up-to-date on best practices, emerging techniques, and new tools in design and multimedia
Ensure all college design materials comply with copyright laws, accessibility standards, and BYU brand guidelines
Recommend process improvements, templates, and creative approaches that enhance overall communication efforts
Required What qualifies you for this role:
A firm commitment to the mission of BYU
Bachelor's degree in graphic design, illustration, advertising, or a related field and two years of professional graphic design experience in both print and digital formats OR six years of professional graphic design experience in both print and digital formats without a degree
Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite, including Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop
Strong understanding of layout, typography, color theory, and brand consistency
Skill in preparing files for print production and coordinating with print vendors
Ability to communicate and collaborate professionally with faculty, staff, administrators, and students
Ability to rapidly learn and proficiently use website management tools and other technical software
Strong attention to detail, organization, and time management
Preferred Experience in higher education, nonprofit communication, or scientific/technical communication
Experience managing or mentoring student employees or junior designers
Familiarity with UI/UX best practices and basic web accessibility principles
Experience designing for web content management systems (CMS)
Experience with animation, motion graphics, or video editing tools (e.g., After Effects, Premiere)
Working knowledge of HTML/CSS (basic)
Ability to create data visualizations or infographics that explain complex topics

Typical Starting Pay: $31.25 to $40.50 an hour
