Retirement: Competitive retirement package to secure your future. Responsibilities The primary responsibility of this position is to directly support the mission of Mayo Clinic Business Development. The Associate will perform as an individual contributor, responsible for advancing and completing workflows and processes, and for developing or contributing to assessments, reports, analyses, business plans, market research and other material related to assigned projects. The Associate will be expected to work on multiple projects simultaneously and organize and manage work accordingly. The Department is organized into three functional work units, with positions assigned within one of these areas and responsibilities as described below: Partnerships – Source, evaluate, analyze, and develop new business opportunities for Mayo Clinic, including but not limited to partnerships, joint ventures, new company spin‑offs, investments, mergers and acquisitions. Work with areas throughout Mayo Clinic and the marketplace to identify new business opportunities and connect these activities with existing operational units, aligning with the strategic plan and market priorities. Contribute to a network of industry, entrepreneurial, and investor contacts as a resource for business development and commercialization activities. Commercialization – Evaluate the commercial potential of medical inventions and discoveries from Mayo’s research activities, develop and implement technology sales and marketing plans, manage the patent process, identify potential commercial partners, negotiate license agreements, and advise Mayo physicians and scientists on intellectual property protection and technology‑based business matters. Technology Development – Evaluate invention disclosures, assist in processing disclosures and patent applications (identify potential patentable inventions, provide prior‑art searches, assist in drafting applications, review patent correspondence, conduct right‑to‑use searches, analyze patent threats, and educate staff on patent issues). This work is performed under the direction of internal or external counsel. Based on needs, positions are also primarily assigned to one or more work teams focusing on specific areas: Biopharmaceuticals, Medical Devices/Diagnostics, Health Information Technology/AI, Health Services & Robotics, or Investments. Projects are categorized within one of these six areas. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree required (advanced degree preferred), in business, science, or a related field, plus one year of experience in business development, finance/venture capital, technology transfer, venture management, IP commercialization, licensing, partnerships, investments, or related roles in healthcare, medical biotechnology, or fintech. One year of experience directly related to technology licensing for the Commercialization Work Unit. In lieu of a degree, a minimum of experience equal to the number and level of years normally required to earn the degree will be recognized (e.g., four years for a Bachelor’s, two years for a Master’s, two years for an advanced degree). Must be able to perform successfully in a business‑development/technology‑commercialization role, navigate complex inter‑ and intragovernmental relationships, and possess excellent verbal and written communication skills. Strong project management and time‑management skills are required to manage several initiatives simultaneously. Entrepreneurial/intrapreneurial qualities, strong analytical skills, resourcefulness, and the ability to work independently are essential. Additional Skills & Qualifications Preferred experience may include: business plan creation, due diligence, market research, marketing plan development, concept analysis, business model development, financial pro‑forma development, legal/regulatory assessment, product performance monitoring, technical sales, evaluation of medical technologies, negotiations, contract drafting, and assessment of commercialization potential. Knowledge of science, clinical or bench research, business principles, laws, and regulations related to patenting and licensing is advantageous. Experience in an academic medical center, mergers and acquisitions, financial modeling, Chartered Financial Analyst certification, or a national consulting firm may receive special consideration.
