Outdoor Adventure Day Camp Counselor

YMCA Buffalo Niagara operates Outdoor Adventure Day Camps. Camp activities include swimming, nature study, hiking, archery, gaga pit games, arts & crafts, and more. Assists the Day Camp Director with the successful operation of the summer day camp program at YMCA Camp Kenan in Barker, NY. Plans, organizes, and implements activities, provides direction and supervises day camp staff, performs administrative tasks, and ensures the safety of campers. Monday

Friday, up to 40 hours per week, while the camp program is in session. Must be available to work between the hours of 7:00 am and 6:00 pm. This is a seasonal summer position. Plan and implement camp activities as per the program design. Manage the staff schedule to ensure that staff-to-child ratios are met. Provide daily oversight and leadership of camp operations. Identify and solve problems, implement appropriate discipline techniques and enforce policies and procedures. Actively ensure the safety and well-being of all children by adhering to YMCA Buffalo Niagara Child Abuse Prevention policies. Recognize, respond to, and immediately report any suspected abuse, policy violations, or safety concerns. Plan and facilitate components of the pre-camp staff training program. Ensure effective communication between staff and parents of campers. Develop and maintain positive, open communication between campers and camp staff. Implement and maintain work rules and regulations as required by YMCA Buffalo Niagara, the NYS Health Department, and other regulatory agencies. Pursue new and innovative program initiatives. Participate with campers when needed, including in the pool during swim lessons and free swim. Perform administrative functions including attendance, camper development, and evaluation. Set up and organize equipment and supplies for camp activities. Follow and enforce department protocol to clean and disinfect commonly used surfaces. Ensure PPE compliance. Maintain the cleanliness and organization of program/work areas. Perform the responsibilities of the Day Camp Director during absences. Implement ongoing safety checks to ensure a healthy and safe camp environment. Implement emergency procedures when necessary. Performs additional duties as assigned. Knowledge of and previous experience in camping, group work, recreation, and related fields. Must be at least 18 years of age. Experience in program administration. Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills. Have and maintain community CPR certification. (American Red Cross, ASHI, American Heart Association) Responding to Emergencies or Advanced First Aid certification may be required before the start of camp programs.
