Web and Digital Communications Assistant

Overview

This is a part-time, in-person role that provides support to the City’s web and digital communications manager and the social media and digital engagement specialist. The position helps maintain the City of Rockville’s websites, software platforms, digital media assets, and social media platforms including, but not limited to, Facebook, Twitter, lnstagram and YouTube. The incumbent should have basic knowledge and awareness of best practices in web and digital media technologies, standards, and requirements, and will work with Communications and Community Engagement to ensure the web, digital, and social media presence aligns with and supports the organization’s strategic goals and objectives. Responsibilities

Assist the web and digital communications manager with website update requests and content management of the city website and related online platforms. Assist the social media and digital engagement specialist with compiling weekly email newsletters and creating graphics and other visual content for social media and digital platforms. Upload, digitize, and index “Rockville Reports” articles for use on the news module, e-newsletters, and social media platforms. Perform other duties as assigned. Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree with major coursework in communication, web design, digital communications, journalism, or closely related field; and one to three years of experience in digital communications, web design, and/or social media content creation; or any equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Excellent written and oral communication skills, including strong writing skills for the web and social media. Knowledge of user experience (UX) best practices and plain language writing. Knowledge of Associated Press (AP) style. Knowledge of CSS, HTML and hands-on experience with content management systems, such as WordPress. Knowledge of social media platforms, including experience with the Meta Business Suite. Knowledge of graphic design software such as Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, and/or social media graphic design software. Experience with macOS. Knowledge of good design, typography, color, and their application on the web. Experience with email marketing platforms such as Mailchimp, preferred. Knowledge of Microsoft Office. Note: Applicant must be able to access and manage city social media platforms, which may require the use of a personal social media account for administrative access.
