
Financial Aid Counselor I - Scholarships

Overview
Utah Valley University offers a dynamic opportunity for professionals who are passionate about expanding access to higher education and supporting student success. In this role, you’ll help current and prospective students navigate the scholarship and financial aid landscape, ensuring they understand available programs, eligibility requirements, and application processes. Working under the direction of an assistant director, you’ll play a key part in awarding institutional and private scholarships, exercising professional judgment, and guiding students and families through important financial decisions that shape their educational journey.
This position is ideal for someone who enjoys a blend of analytical work, student interaction, and community engagement. You’ll maintain and monitor UVU’s scholarship management platform for compliance, research national trends, and review financial aid files to ensure accuracy and adherence to policy and law. You’ll also represent UVU in outreach events, including high school visits and orientation presentations, helping future Wolverines understand their financial options. This role offers the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in students’ lives while developing expertise in scholarship administration, compliance, and student support within a collaborative, mission-driven environment.
Responsibilities
Awards current and prospective students institutional and private scholarship awards, advises on the scholarship process, and provides information on available programs, procedures, and eligibility requirements. Exercises professional judgement to determine eligibility. Evaluates and processes students’ scholarship requests and makes award adjustments.
Evaluates students’ financial need based on federal, state, and institutional regulations. Determines exemption for those students with appeals and/or deferments; coordinates and processes all reports, deferments, and appeals for status change and academic progress. Counsels students on refunds, repayments, and loans. Assesses eligibility for federal student aid.
Develops training programs and informs and/or trains peers regarding opportunities for financing education based on federal, state, and institutional funding requirements. Research information on federal and state regulations governing the administration of sponsored financial programs. Research federal, state, and institutional financing changes affecting education funding.
Contributes to the Financial Aid and Scholarships Office's mission, vision, and long-term objectives by consulting with departmental leaders concerning operational needs, problems, enhancements, and recommending new initiatives. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree plus one year of experience related to the Summary of Duties; OR any combination of education and/or experience totaling five years.
Qualifications Knowledge
Knowledge of federal, state, and institutional rules pertaining to financial aid and scholarships, including need analysis, eligibility assessment, packaging strategies, loan awarding, evaluation of academic progress, and NCAA rules.
Knowledge of compiling data and preparing reports.
Knowledge of financial aid institutional policies and procedures.
Knowledge of computerized financial aid systems, preferably Banner.
Knowledge of computer applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, databases, PowerPoint, internet tools, email systems, and other general computer skills.
Skills
High technical aptitude and skill in problem solving, technical troubleshooting, decision-making, and prioritizing.
Effectively uses interpersonal skills and communication skills, including tact, diplomacy, understanding, compassion, and valuing all contributions, while maintaining adherence to policies.
Skills in maintaining an established work schedule, including occasional evenings and weekends for outreach programs.
Skills in making public presentations to large and small groups, and one-on-one.
