
Recreation Specialist II
Fairbanks North Star, Borough of (AK), Fairbanks, AK, United States
Responsible to assist with special events and instruct a variety of inclusion-oriented recreational programs, with an emphasis on participation by children and youth, seniors, and individuals with a wide range of disabilities for the Recreation Division, Parks & Recreation Department.

None Responsibilities
Provide individualized assistance to indoor/outdoor recreational sports and activities for children and youth, adults, and individuals with disabilities. Develop specific individual participant goals. Assist in planning and implementing special events and programs. Perform first aid procedures as appropriate for the situation. Maintain attendance records. Assist in equipment maintenance, inventory, and use during programs and events. Chaperone same gender participants in the locker room or bathroom during adaptive programs. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: High school diploma or equivalent. One (1) year direct work experience teaching programs to children and youth, seniors, or individuals with physical or developmental disabilities may be substituted for the diploma requirement. Minimum one (1) year of direct work experience teaching programs to children and youth, seniors, or individuals with physical or developmental disabilities. Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer for a variety of computer programs (basic MS Word & Excel required). Ability to operate a variety of office machines (copier, scanner, fax, multi-function phone, printers, etc.). Must have and be able to maintain a valid driver’s license. Must meet insurance standards and maintain insurability under the Borough's insurance program. If personal automobile is used for Borough business, proof of automobile insurance at statutory limits must be provided. (A CURRENT COPY OF DRIVING RECORD WILL BE REQUIRED UPON REQUEST.) KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES Ability to swim preferred. Demonstrated ability to work effectively and courteously with the general public, other organizations/agencies, and other staff members. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively. Must be able to achieve Standard First Aid, Adult and Child CPR, and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) certifications as recognized by the American Red Cross (or equivalent) within three (3) months of hire. OTHER A PROFICIENCY TEST MAY BE ADMINISTERED. This position requires a criminal background investigation and fingerprinting. JOB CONTACTS:
Ordinary business contact with employees in own division; frequent public contact and occasional contacts involving outside organizations/agencies. JOB RESPONSIBILITY:
Does not supervise; many minor problems daily, and an occasional major one with supervisor usually required for help and instruction; the consequences of error, carelessness or mistaken judgment require minimal effort to recover. WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Works in various recreational facilities and where conditions are pleasant and in the field where conditions are somewhat disagreeable with occasional heat, cold, wet, noise, etc.; up to ½ time is spent standing, or walking; minor accident and health hazards are probable; requires short periods of heavy lifting, pushing or pulling (50+ lbs.). This position falls under the Borough’s Blood Borne Pathogen (BBP) Exposure Control Program as it is reasonably anticipated that infrequent exposure to blood or other bodily fluids may occur while performing some job duties.
