The purpose of this internship is to provide hands-on experience in community engagement within a law enforcement setting. Interns will play an active role in supporting outreach efforts, coordinating community events, and assisting with recruitment initiatives that strengthen relationships between the Police Department and Auburn residents.
This internship focuses on the community-facing side of policing, offering real-world experience in communication, event coordination, and public service.
Responsibilities
Assist in the planning, coordination, and execution of community engagement events, including National Night Out
Serve as a primary liaison between the Police Department and community members for National Night Out planning, maintaining consistent communication via phone and email
Manage and track community host site applications and support event logistics
Coordinate outreach materials, including goody bags, t-shirts, signage, banners, and flyers
Represent the Police Department at community events and outreach opportunities in a professional and approachable manner
Support recruitment efforts, including assisting with the development of a Police Department recruitment video and other promotional initiatives
Provide a high level of customer service while interacting with community members, staff, and partners
Maintain organized records, timelines, and communications for assigned projects
Work collaboratively with sworn officers and professional staff to support community engagement efforts
Perform general administrative support tasks as assigned
Desired Skills & Characteristics
Represent the Auburn Police Department with professionalism, integrity, and respect
Maintain confidentiality when handling sensitive information
Demonstrate strong communication, organizational, and time management skills
Exercise sound judgment and the ability to work independently
Provide exceptional customer service in all interactions
Eligibility
Pursuing an Associate's or Bachelor's degree
in
communications, public relations, criminal justice, marketing, public administration, or a related field
Must be at least 18 years of age.
Must have a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
Must submit to fingerprinting.
Must have an acceptable background with no felony convictions, serious misdemeanors, and or drug history.
Schedule, Pay, and Commitment We are asking for a commitment through our 10-week program, from
June 15th - August 21st . Preference will be given to candidates that are available to work up to 40 hours per week throughout the program. If you are a top candidate, your availability and assigned schedule will be discussed with you before moving into the background check process.
Our core business hours are Monday - Friday, 8am to 5pm, with an hour for lunch. The position requires a flexible schedule, including some evenings and weekends. We are physically in the office every day, and you may have an assigned desk with a City issued computer. This position is not eligible for remote work, so you must be able to commit to being onsite to be considered for this role.
Compensation and Experience The pay rates for this position will be offered as follows:
Freshman & Sophomores: Step 1 - $20.00
Juniors & Seniors: Step 2 - $21.58
Postgraduates: Step 3 - $23.15
