Fine Art Crate Fabricator/Carpenter

in Philadelphia of any level to become part of the crate fabrication and woodshop team. This position is responsible for the production of custom made museum crates, travel frames, inner boxes, and inner components that are at times complex. Fabricators are familiar with a wide range of hand and power tools, including table saws, band saws, miter saws, routers and drills/impact drivers. Self motivation, time management, and attention to detail are essential qualities. Accurate measuring, basic arithmetic, spatial thinking and precise construction are also key. Previous experience with construction, woodshop or fabrication is required. The position requires the utmost of precision as well as safety. Previous experience with crate construction and shipping artwork, as well as material concerns related to artwork, is preferred. Experience with carpentry or cabinet making outside of an academic setting is a plus. The ideal candidate is a highly skilled carpenter and fabricator, combining a strong work ethic with innovative problem-solving skills and meticulous attention to detail. Atelier works directly with major cultural institutions, prominent private collections, auction houses as well as major national and international galleries. Atelier FAS has several museum-quality storage facilities on the East Coast, and employs staff in the areas of Client Services, Logistics, Operations, Art Handling, Registration, Fabrication, Storage and Security. Floor Manager and Sr. Woodshop Manager Pay Range:

$20 hr - $27 hr - commensurate with experience and skill level Fabricator- 1-2 years experience Senior Fabricator - 2-4 years experience Shop Technician - 4-6 years experience Senior Shop Technician - 6-8 years experience Responsibilities include but are not limited to: Fabricate crates and conveyances by following directions from Woodshop Managers and Project Managers Work directly with Woodshop Manager, Floor Manager, Sr. Shop Technicians, Shop Technicians, Senior Fabricators and Fabricators on crating/fabrication/carpentry projects Communicate with Art Handling teams about projects as needed Use a wide range of hand and power tools to build custom conveyances for artworks according to drawings, specifications and instructions. Proper use of forklift to load/unload deliveries and conveyances Receive and store shipments of materials Organize materials, be aware of supply levels, and alert supervisors if supplies are low Maintain a clean work environment Perform routine maintenance on tools or manage others in the process of doing so Some computer, Ipad and App use, mainly for ascertaining measurement specifications Uphold Atelier's policies and standards of excellence Requirements: Skills & Experience - Previous experience in a wood or fabrication shop where a high degree of craftsmanship is required Prolific and safe use of power and hand tools; proficiency with table saw, chop saw, band saw, and routers mandatory Strict adherence to safety requirements and guidelines is mandatory Familiarity with the design-build process required Ability to see and read and interpret design measurements clearly Previous experience with crate construction and shipping artwork, as well as material concerns related to artwork preferred Experience with carpentry or cabinet making outside of an academic setting is preferred Ability to work independently and as part of a team Interest in design and functionality as it relates to the art objects and packing requirements Knowledge of Sketchup or 3-d design programs and an interest in learning new programs is is a plus Forklift and OSHA prior certifications significant plus Physical Requirements - Able to lift objects weighing up to 80 pounds and moving objects weighing up to 150 pounds Able to climb ladder up to 20 feet Able to use hand tools such as drills, hammer, screwdrivers, pliers, and wrenches Able to use power tools such as table saws, routers, nail guns, and bandsaws BA or BFA preferred Atelier Fine Art Services offers a host of benefits on the the first month after 60 days of full-time employment including: PTO, sick time, health insurance, dental insurance, vision insurance, life insurance, employer funded short term and long disability insurances, HSA, FSA, Commuter benefits, various other voluntary insurance offerings and opportunities for overtime pay.
