Job Summary The Assistant Director of Residential Life plays a key leadership role in fostering a vibrant, safe, and inclusive residential community. This position is responsible for the implementation and operational management of residential programming, community engagement initiatives, and the recruitment, selection, training, and supervision of Resident Assistants (RAs) and Hall Directors (HDs). The Assistant Director provides day-to-day functional supervision and operational support for Area Coordinators in coordination with the Director. The Assistant Director ensures that programs and services meet the educational, social, and developmental needs of residents while supporting the mission of the university and the Department of Residential Life. This is a live-in position requiring a strong commitment to student engagement, staff development, and operational excellence.
The ULM Residential Life staff is to be a visible and interactive staff, meeting and interacting with our student-residents where they live, study and play.
Duties and Responsibilities Leadership & Supervision Recruit, select, train, and supervise Residential Life professional and student staff, including Hall Directors and Resident Assistants. Provide day-to-day functional supervision and support for Area Coordinators in coordination with the Director. Provide ongoing coaching, evaluation, and professional development opportunities for staff. Meet regularly with staff and students to address performance, community expectations, documentation, and policy enforcement. Serve as a resource and mentor to staff, fostering a culture of accountability, inclusion, and growth. Support departmental staffing strategies, onboarding processes, and succession planning as directed by the Director.
Operations & Administrative Oversight Coordinate staffing for early move-in, regular move-in, university holidays and closures, move-outs, late check-outs, and summer housing. Administer housing charges for damages, fees, and other financial assessments in accordance with departmental policies and Director approval. Purchase, inventory, and maintain supplies for programming and community engagement within approved budgets. Process and reconcile financial transactions, including check requests, interdepartmental transfers, and purchasing card activity, in compliance with university and departmental procedures. Maintain and update departmental operational manuals and publications, including the Guide to Residence Hall Living and the Residential Student Staff Manual, in alignment with policies and protocols established by the Director.
Programming & Community Engagement Coordinate and support residential programming initiatives aligned with departmental priorities, learning outcomes, and assessment expectations established by the Director. Review and coordinate program proposals to ensure alignment with departmental goals and student development objectives. Monitor residential programming quality to ensure consistency, educational impact, and compliance with departmental expectations. Collaborate with campus partners (e.g., University Police, Athletics, Counseling Center, Auxiliary Enterprises) to enhance services and co-curricular learning opportunities. Support community standards processes, conflict resolution, and student conduct documentation within residential communities.
Special Projects & Instruction Teach and support an advanced Spring course related to residential leadership development as assigned and approved by the Director and appropriate academic partners. Serve as the primary operational administrator for departmental technology systems, including housing software platforms, access systems, website content, and social media platforms, under the strategic direction of the Director. Coordinate housing logistics and staffing for summer camps, conferences, and seasonal programs. Support special initiatives related to housing transitions, training enhancements, system upgrades, and operational improvements.
Additional Responsibilities Serve as primary operational responder during assigned after-hours on-call rotations for student crises and emergency response. Work evenings, weekends, and extended hours during peak operational periods, including move-in, move-out, and summer transitions. Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Residential Life in support of departmental and institutional goals.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Student Affairs, Higher Education, or a related field. Minimum of three (3) years of progressive experience working in college or university housing. Demonstrated experience in staff supervision, student development, and program management.
