Description
The City of Norfolk Department of Parks & Recreation is seeking a Recreational Specialist to support and deliver arts-focused programs for all ages, with an emphasis on arts and crafts, passive recreation and creative activities that engage a multigenerational community. The department notes it has been awarded national accreditation by the Commission for Accreditation of Parks and Recreation Agencies, to continue providing quality recreational services that enrich the lives of Norfolk's residents. Department Starting Hiring Salary: $51,610.42 Essential Functions
Lead arts and crafts, passive recreation, and multigenerational creative programs. Adapt activities to various ages, abilities and interests. Maintain program areas, supplies and safety standards. Assist with events, community art projects and program promotion. Provide excellent customer service and support facility operations. Serves on committees for the planning and marketing events. Assist in managing facility operations and aids employees. Assist with the management of daily operations of the facility by scheduling and monitoring volunteers and part-time employees, compiling figures and preparing reports, collecting fees for programs and rental of the facility. Interact with the citizens by responding to inquiries, and contributing to the growth and development of youth, teens, adults, and seniors. Performs related duties by carrying out administrative responsibilities, transporting patrons and writing initiatives. Education/Experience
Work requires knowledge of a specific vocational, administrative, or technical nature which may be obtained with six months/one year of advanced study or training past the high school equivalency. Six months experience. Preferred Education/Experience
Associate degree / Recreation and Tourism, or any closely related field. At least one-year experience in arts, recreation, or related fields preferred. At least one-year experience working with youth, teens, adults or seniors. Preferred Licenses and Certifications
Valid Driver’s License/ First Aid, CPR certified Additional Information & Requirements

Monday to Sunday; 6:00am to 12:00am; not to exceed 40hrs a week; flexible hours including weekends, holidays and special events. Regular full-time and permanent part-time employees may receive paid holidays, vacation and sick leave, employer paid pension plan, basic life insurance, voluntary participation in medical and dental, Section 457 deferred compensation, long-term disability, optional life insurance for self, spouse and children, medical and dependent care reimbursement plans, access to membership in credit union and employer provided parking. Special project/grant employees are generally eligible for the same benefits of regular full-time employees; however, retirement, life insurance and participation in health plans vary depending upon funding and authorization. Temporary/seasonal and part-time employees are generally only eligible for employer provided parking and access to membership in credit union. Retirement If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction. If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit.
