Job Description The Dog Groomer at The Asher House is responsible for providing professional grooming services to the dogs in our care. This role ensures the health, cleanliness, and overall well‑being of the dogs by maintaining their coats, nails, and overall hygiene. The Dog Groomer will work closely with the animal care staff to ensure each dog receives the best care possible.
Key Responsibilities
Bathing and Drying
Thoroughly bathe dogs using appropriate shampoos and conditioners.
Ensure proper drying techniques, taking into consideration the breed and coat type.
Brushing and Detangling
Brush and comb dogs to remove loose hair, mats, and tangles.
Address specific grooming needs based on the dog's coat type.
Haircutting and Styling
Trim and style dog fur according to breed standards.
Use clippers, shears, and other grooming tools with precision and safety.
Nail Trimming
Trim dogs' nails to a safe and comfortable length.
Be cautious to avoid cutting into the quick.
Ear Cleaning
Clean dogs' ears to prevent infections and ensure overall ear health.
Teeth Cleaning
Brush dogs' teeth or recommend dental care products to maintain oral hygiene.
Checking for Health Issues
Observe dogs for any signs of skin issues, lumps, bumps, or abnormalities.
Report any health concerns to caretakers.
Communication
Communicate effectively with the companion animal caretaking team to address any concerns.
Cleaning and Sanitization
Maintain a clean and organized grooming area.
Sanitize grooming tools and equipment regularly.
Record Keeping
Keep accurate records of each dog's grooming history, including services provided and any health issues observed.
Qualifications
3-5 years’ experience as a dog groomer is preferred.
Knowledge of different dog breeds and their specific grooming requirements.
Comfortable handling dogs of all sizes and temperaments.
Excellent communication skills.
Physical Requirements
Ability to lift and handle dogs of varying sizes.
Stamina to stand for extended periods during grooming sessions.
Education
High school diploma or equivalent is typically required.
Completion of a formal grooming training program is an advantage.
Working Conditions
Work in a sanctuary setting which may include extended periods of time outside regardless of the weather.
