Technical Director, Theatre and Film

The Department of Theatre and Film at Jacksonville State University invites applications for a full‑time position as Technical Director beginning August 2026.

The Theatre & Film Technical Director coordinates all scenic activities (scenery construction, painting, and props) for departmental productions, supervises and operates lighting and sound systems, and provides technical assistance for related activities. The position supervises and instructs student workers and volunteer workers, maintains shop, lighting, and sound equipment, manages inventory of required supplies, and ensures the physical space is maintained and safe for production.

Anticipated start date: August 3, 2026.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Coordinates scenic activities for departmental productions ensuring production deadlines are met.
  • Produces working drawings for scenic construction of designs.
  • Provides a comprehensive learning experience for students on construction and running crews by assessing skill levels and overseeing instruction of technical aspects and safety procedures.
  • Ensures efficient shop operation by overseeing human and material resources and promoting preventive maintenance, preservation, and cleaning of scenery shop tools and equipment.
  • Serves an active role in the education of students by assisting in the stagecraft and construction components of the curriculum.
  • Maintains professional competence through reading, contacts, and attendance at professional development courses or other training as required by the department head.
  • Corresponds with vendors and other theatre professionals on new techniques and equipment.
  • Uses and teaches appropriate techniques for carpentry, electrical, electronics, welding, painting, manual and computer drafting, sound production, fine woodworking and stage rigging.
  • Operates hand and power tools and gas and electric welders.
  • Reads and understands floor plans, design sketches, blueprints, and construction plans.
  • Applies intermediate to advanced computer skills (Word, Excel, Internet); CAD software such as AutoCAD or Vectorworks; and sound or lighting software for theatre, for teaching and productions.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the department head.

Qualifications

Must possess a bachelor’s degree in fine arts and a minimum of three years of practical work experience in technical production at a university or professional level. Preference may be given to candidates who possess a master’s degree in fine arts and experience in higher education administration working with students.

The Department of Theatre and Film offers Bachelor of Arts degrees in both Theatre and Film. The Bachelor of Arts in Theatre gives undergraduate students the opportunity to act, design, write, direct and stage‑manage, and students choose an academic concentration in Performance or Production. The emphasis is on creating well‑rounded theatre artists who experience a variety of disciplines for creating theatre.
