Peer Recovery Specialist

Job Overview The Peer Recovery Specialist will be designated to the Recovery Court participants. This peer will act as a level of support and advocacy for the participants with substance use disorders. This individual will perform work of moderate difficulty in providing peer support and advocacy services for consumers of substance use disorders and their families and other caregivers; does related work as required.

Responsibilities

Provide peer support and advocacy services for participants with substance use disorders, their families and other caregivers.

Represent and advocate for the participant perspective within the community and the mental health system.

Communicate effectively both orally and in writing, and develop and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external customers.

Operate a personal computer and related software and standard office equipment.

Support others in recovery and demonstrate efforts at self‑directed recovery.

Work in a community corrections setting where there is risk to personal safety due to close contact with the offender population.

Perform work that may be sedentary with occasional exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and involve reaching, repetitive motions, and vocal communication.

Qualifications

High school diploma or GED; bachelor’s degree or training as a peer advocate preferred.

One year of experience in providing peer recovery support services or in a related behavioral health work, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Personal experience with serious substance use disorder and own recovery.

Possession of an appropriate driver’s license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Certification as a Peer Recovery Specialist by the Virginia Certification Board (VCB).

Successful completion of 72 hours in each of the four domains in the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS) CPRS Training Curriculum: Advocacy, Ethical responsibility, Mentoring and Education, and Recovery/wellness support.

Familiarity with recovery courts is a plus.

Ability to support others in recovery and demonstrate self‑directed recovery efforts; ability to represent and advocate for participants.

May be required to work a flexible or on‑call schedule.
