Residential Education Coordinator (Resident Director) – Office of Residence Life, Salt Lake City, UT
Job Summary:
The Resident Director position is a 12‑month, full‑time professional staff role within the Office of Residence Life and the Student Affairs Division at the University of Utah. Reporting to an Assistant Director, Resident Directors manage an area to benefit, develop, and support residents. The University of Utah is in a period of rapid growth and change. This role requires living on campus and includes on‑call responsibilities within an assigned area and across campus as needed.
Compensation & Benefits:
Starting Annual Salary: $53,167
Two‑Bedroom Apartment: Furnishings available, including utilities and internet
Professional development funds, partial meal plan, and moving expense coverage (contingent on annual budget)
Background Check:
A successful background check is required before a formal offer can be made.
Responsibilities
Resident Experience
Guide staff in implementing the Residential Experience Model
Develop community & educational environments
Oversee staff effort in intentional student interactions
Support living‑learning communities, student leadership, and academic initiatives
Foster community through initiatives and program development
Contribute to continuous improvement of the Residential Experience Model
Participate in departmental committees and task forces
Supervision
Train, supervise, and evaluate Resident Advisors and Graduate Assistants
Conduct individual and group meetings, providing clear expectations and feedback
Plan staff development initiatives aligned with departmental goals
Hold Resident Advisors accountable with ongoing performance feedback
Community Development
Foster relationships among residents, staff, and campus partners
Encourage staff to build supportive connections
Collaborate with faculty and partners to enhance engagement
Promote a culture of responsibility, respect, and boundaries
Student Support & Accountability
Serve as hearing officer, case manager, and on‑call staff member
Manage student policy violations and apply sanctions
Collaborate with campus partners for crisis response
Educate staff to enforce policies and safety standards
Administration & Building Management
Oversee daily operations: move‑in/out, room changes, safety checks, facilities management
Serve as liaison with Facilities, Custodial Services, Police, and Administration Services
Manage area budgets, approve expenditures, and complete tasks accurately
Participate in large‑scale processes such as training and evaluation events
Perform additional duties as assigned by leadership
Availability
Full‑time live‑on staff member with regular office hours 8 a.m.–5 p.m.
Must be accessible for evening, weekend, holiday, and emergency duties; on‑call time within 20‑minute response distance
Position considered essential personnel and requires 24/7 coverage shared among staff
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree with 2+ years of experience
Experience working with diverse student populations
Experience in supervision, administration, organization, and planning
Leadership experience with student staff teams
Experience with student conduct, crisis intervention, and emergency response
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree in College Student Personnel/Student Affairs Administration or related field
Direct experience in Residence Life/Housing
Experience responding to student crises or facility emergencies
Experience serving on‑call
Experience analyzing conflicts, building teams, and managing dynamics
Knowledge of current principles in Student Affairs and University Housing
Multi‑tasking and organizational skills in fast‑paced environment
Knowledge of fiscal and budgetary practices
Experience advising student organizations/boards
