Position Overview
Student Senate is the primary advocate for students on campus. Our 90 senators, 15 legislative officers, 10 executive staff members, 5 election commission members, and advisors work together to allocate about $24 million in student fees in ways that best serve students. We also represent the KU student voice within University, State, and National Governance, working to address and develop policy in students' best interests.
Job Description
- 30% - The Public Relations Director shall be responsible for maintaining the Student Senate social media accounts, and website.
- 10% - The Public Relations Director is responsible for formulating and coordinating a Student Senate Outreach Plan for the academic year.
- 10% - The Public Relations Director shall be responsible for distributing news releases to local media sources with pertinent Student Senate news, as well as monitoring coverage of senate in local media sources.
- 5% - The Public Relations Director shall be responsible for sending and correspondence, on behalf of the Student Senate, to individuals, organizations, and businesses.
- 5% - The Public Relations Director shall be responsible for distributing news releases outlining the decisions of the line-item, block, and fee review committees to the Student Senate website and Student Senate social media accounts, as well as to local media outlets within 72 hours of the conclusion of line-item, block, and fee-review committees.
- 5% - The Public Relations Director shall be responsible for publicizing the Spring General Election, which shall include the creation of an election guide on the Student Senate website and a non‑partisan guide of the Student Coalitions and Candidates running in the election.
- 5% - Be responsible for other tasks as may be assigned by the Student Senate Constitution, the Student Body President, the Student Executive Council, or the Student’s Assembly.
- 5% - Work with the Outreach Director to support them through social media and official communications to student organizations.
- 5% - Maintain an up‑to‑date list of all Student Senate passwords.
- 5% - Create and/or approve all Student Senate logos and branding directions.
- 5% - Coordinate and ensure streaming all Students Assembly meetings.
- 5% - Serve as an ex‑officio, non‑voting member of the Students Assembly and Student Executive Council.
- 5% - The Public Relations Director shall be responsible for creating and maintaining a calendar on the Student Senate website with all publicly available Student Senate council, committee, board, and other relevant meetings and events sent to the Public Relations Director, via email.
Required Qualifications
- Available on Wednesday nights from 5pm‑10pm for Student Senate meetings.
Preferred Qualifications
- Public Relations experience as shown in application materials.
- Social media experience as shown in application materials.
- Knowledge of Student Senate.
- Great communications skills as shown in application materials.
- Prior experience demonstrating initiative and innovative thinking as shown in application materials.
- Microsoft Word experience as shown in application materials.
- Website development and maintenance experience as shown in application materials.
- Adobe Suite experience as shown in application materials.
Position Requirements
During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: (1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or (2) be pre‑enrolled in the upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or (3) be enrolled in summer session or (4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments).
Employment Conditions
- Student employees are not eligible for remote work arrangements unless an exception is approved by the unit leadership and HR.
- This is an hourly/non‑exempt position. A student employee cannot hold an hourly/non‑exempt position and a salaried/exempt graduate or undergraduate position (GRA/GTA/GA/RUA/RGA) concurrently.
