Job Description Summary The Technical Designer is responsible for oversight and creation of accurate measurements, grading, and construction, the management and updating of all technical packs. The incumbent is also responsible for clear and timely communication with product design, merchandising, overseas partners, external and internal factories, and suppliers ensuring the technical design process runs efficiently and effectively to meet product calendar deadlines.
Job Description Function
Serve as Technical Design team member and actively participate in fittings with Design team and other cross functional team members and advise on modifications. Provide call outs and critiques to verify that all issues are identified.
Provide direction and guidance to the Technical Design team to ensure accurate execution of requested measurements, quality, construction, and overall fit of apparel products.
Manage and oversee the completion of design specification packages through the creation of graded specifications, construction standards, detail sketches and matched to the Bill of Materials (BOM) with garment construction information. Collaborate with the product design team, merchandiser, and other appropriate business partners to ensure the desired product is achieved, while working within the established production schedule.
Collaborate with business partners to gain clear direction and consensus of fit intent.
Communicate product changes and updates to vendors and manufacturers. Clarify fit comments and corrective direction to overseas partners as needed. Identify potential production, quality and costing issues and make recommendations to ensure brand integrity.
Provide complete and articulate fit comments in a timely manner, including any necessary points of measure, sketches, and digital photos.
Oversee the execution of design intent into bulk production while maintaining high quality standards.
Oversee and manage the creation and maintenance of digital files for each body block.
Correct patterns as necessary to achieve best possible fit.
Ensure samples for fittings are organized and prepared.
Education And Experience
An Associate or Bachelor’s degree in fashion design or equivalent of 5 - 10 years of experience.
Generally, 5+ years technical design and/or pattern making experience in the apparel industry.
Strong knowledge of garment construction, sewing technique, patternmaking, grading, and textiles.
Proficiency in Adobe Illustrator, PDM/PLM, AccuMark PDS/3D/GMS, CLO3D, or comparable software, Outlook, and Microsoft Office Suite.
Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, across multiple audiences and geographies at all levels of the organization.
Good understanding of production timelines, equipment, and garment construction options.
Ability to multi-task.
Strong organizational skills; high level of attention to detail.
Ability to lead, design and create, comprehend fit and garment development, and make recommendations to leadership.
Ability to proactively solve problems and effectively manage multiple challenges.
Flexibility for domestic and international travel when needed.
