Overview
We are seeking a full-time
Mechanical Designer 2
at Garmin's U.S. headquarters in the Greater Kansas City area. In this role, you will be responsible for supporting and driving mechanical solutions by providing CAD modeling assistance and drafting support, documentation, testing, and other technical support within a team-oriented environment.
Essential Functions
Support completion of moderately complex mechanical designs for Garmin products
Simultaneously complete basic mechanical design projects with some Mechanical Engineering guidance
Drive completion of derivative projects with minimal guidance from Mechanical Engineer
Expert CAD user able to model complex parts with advanced modeling features
Fully support activities of components sourcing
Attend design reviews and can provide suggestions on mechanical engineering designs
Recommend, coordinate, and execute test plans to verify compliance with design requirements
Support cost tracking activities on tooling, part cost, and design time
Interface with Mechanical Engineers, Electrical Engineers, Industrial Designers, and departments to manage basic tradeoffs between process, production, appearance and performance
Demonstrate knowledge of injection molding, die casting, sheet metal stamping, machining processes, etc. with ability to apply towards basic mechanical designs
Effectively take feedback from Mechanical Engineers and update mechanical designs with minimal directions and is able to offer suggestions on design changes
Proficient use of design standards, procedures, and engineering tools
Exhibit excellent communication skills with the ability to organize thorough reports, structured meetings, and have professional presentation skills
Provide support to a variety of problems using sound problem solving techniques
Serve as a mentor to less experienced Mechanical Designers (Mechanical Designers 1) and participate in recruiting activities as assigned
Basic Qualifications
2-year technical diploma in Mechanical Engineering Technology or Manufacturing Engineering Technology AND a minimum of 4 years relevant experience OR an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience
Excellent academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0 as a general rule)
Demonstrate knowledge of CAD software and the ability to model moderately complex parts
Demonstrate proficient knowledge and utilization of engineering tools necessary for successful performance of this job description
Demonstrated strong and effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
Desired Qualifications
4-year technical diploma in Mechanical Engineering Technology or Manufacturing Engineering Technology AND a minimum of 2 years relevant experience
Outstanding academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.5)
Previous experience working in a team environment
Previous work or internship experience in design, particularly for consumer products
Experience using Onshape and/or SolidWorks CAD systems that includes surface modeling and sheet metal designs
Experience with SolidWorks Product Data Management (PDM) system or similar document management system
Experience with testing of products to verify compliance and design requirements
Mechanical systems repair or troubleshooting experience
