Position Summary The Director of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging (DEIB) is a senior leader within the People & Culture team, working alongside People Strategy (Human Resources) and Organizational Training to embed equity and belonging into every dimension of the organization’s work with staff, clients, partners and the outside community. This role is both strategic and hands‑on — responsible for developing and driving a long‑term DEIB vision while also partnering across departments to translate that vision into meaningful, measurable change.

Given the nature of our work with families navigating homelessness and housing instability — communities disproportionately affected by systemic racism, poverty, and inequity — this role carries particular significance. The Director will ensure that our internal culture, policies, and practices reflect the same commitment to justice and equity that drives our external mission.

We are looking for an expert communicator and leader who is excited to develop a vision, collaborate on solutions, and execute projects from start to finish.

Responsibilities

Serve as a thought partner to the senior leadership team on matters of equity, systemic bias, anti‑racism, and culturally responsive practices.

Identify and monitor key DEIB metrics and benchmarks for reporting purposes which include regular updates on progress, challenges, and opportunities.

Effectively collect and utilize DEIB data in partnership with our People Strategy and Impact + Learning teams. Identify and manage data‑focused projects that are focused on internal diversity, equity, parity, inclusion, and sense of belonging.

In partnership with People Strategy, design and implement initiatives that foster a genuine sense of belonging, psychological safety, and community among all team members.

Partner with People Strategy to review and strengthen hiring, onboarding, retention, promotion, and compensation practices through an equity lens.

Develop and manage grievance and restorative processes related to bias, discrimination, and microaggressions in partnership with People Strategy.

Work closely with the Organizational Training Director to build internal capacity of staff members related to equity, inclusion, and belonging by integrating DEIB concepts into the organization’s training program so concepts are not siloed as standalone content.

Collaborate with program leadership to ensure that DEIB principles are woven into service delivery, client engagement, and community partnerships.

Develop resources, toolkits, and guides that equip staff members to apply an equity lens in their daily work and decision‑making.

Establish operating norms, tools, and practices that put DEIB values at the core of our work with each other, clients, external partners, and the larger community.

Coordinate the employee DEIB Advisory Group, including meeting facilitation, member recruitment, and elevation of the group’s work. Act as a liaison between the group, Leadership Team, the Board of Directors’ DEIB committee, and Compass staff around emergent DEIB issues.

Establish and support the Employee Resource Groups (ERGs), providing guidance and direction to grow ERGs into positive, effective, inclusive spaces within the organization.

Stay current on research, best practices, and emerging trends in DEIB, particularly as they relate to housing justice, poverty, and social services.

Required Qualifications

Minimum of five years of relevant work experience as a DEIB Director, DEIB Manager, Equity Program Director, or a similar role.

Demonstrated experience designing and implementing DEIB strategies at an organizational level, ideally within nonprofit, social services, or mission‑driven environments.

Deep knowledge around systemic oppression, intersectionality, and the ways that race, class, gender, disability, immigration status, and other identities shape access to housing and other resources.

Experience leading and facilitating tough conversations around identity, power, and equity and demonstrated ability to foster a culture of learning and unlearning, listening, and advocacy.

Experience using both qualitative and quantitative data to assess needs, measure impact, and inform strategy.

Ability to work both independently without close oversight, but also as a team player who can productively engage with others.

Strong organizational and project management skills.

Exceptional communication skills — written, verbal, and interpersonal.

Preferred Qualifications

Understanding of trauma‑informed care and systems.

Experience working within or alongside communities disproportionately impacted by homelessness, including Black, Indigenous, Latine, LGBTQ+, immigrant, and disability communities.

Familiarity with restorative justice practices and trauma‑informed approaches.

Experience managing or advising ERGs and DEIB councils.
