The District of Houston is looking for a Wildfire Mitigation Specialist. This position is for a 2-year term and is a 100% grant-funded position. This position is an exempt, non-unionized position.

The ideal candidate for this position will have a background in either structural firefighting or wildland firefighting (or an equivalent combination of education and experience), a solid work ethic, exceptional public relations skills, and the willingness to have fun while accomplishing great things.

Strategically located halfway between the hub cities of Prince George and Terrace, the District and its surrounding countryside can be enjoyed year round, offering a range of activities including cross country skiing, hiking, fishing, biking, and snowmobiling. The Wildfire Mitigation Specialist The Wildfire Mitigation Specialist is responsible for coordinating, implementing, and leading FireSmart activities and wildfire risk reduction initiatives within the District of Houston. Reporting directly to the Director of Protective Services, this position integrates public education, program coordination, home and neighbourhood hazard assessments, administrative oversight, and community engagement to reduce wildfire risk and enhance local resiliency.

Acting as the primary point of contact for FireSmart programming, the position supports preparedness, prevention, and mitigation efforts in accordance with FireSmart BC, FireSmart Canada, and Provincial guidelines. The role works collaboratively with local government leadership, emergency management staff, fire services, and partner agencies to develop and deliver effective wildfire mitigation programming.

Qualifications

Structural Firefighting, Wildland Firefighting or similar (an equivalent combination of education and experience would be considered).

Local FireSmart Representative Certification of willingness to attain.

Wildfire Mitigation Specialist Designation or willingness to attain.

Ability to write detailed technical reports.

Ability to effectively deliver education and outreach materials to a variety of audiences.

Possesses a current, valid Class 5 B.C. Drivers Licence with air brake endorsement or equivalent.

Completion of a satisfactory Criminal Record Check.

Compensation The Wildfire Mitigation Specialist will be compensated with a salary of $69,400 - $81,100 annually with a benefits in lieu package, as well as a family pass to the District’s top-notch Leisure Centre.
