Develop and maintain benefit plan documents, including Summary Plan Descriptions (SPDs), Summaries of Benefits and Coverage (SBCs), Summaries of Material Modifications (SMMs), and plan amendments

Update plan documents for renewals, ensuring all changes are accurately reflected and aligned with client requirements and regulatory standards

Ensure ERISA compliance and regulatory accuracy across all documentation by applying knowledge of federal and state guidelines

Review and evaluate existing plan documents, identifying gaps, inconsistencies, or missing requirements based on group needs and prior plan history

Conduct research on benefit-related questions, interpreting regulations and applying findings to plan documentation

Collaborate cross-functionally with implementation, compliance, and operations teams to gather requirements and ensure alignment

Manage high-volume document production with strict adherence to deadlines and turnaround times

Support audit processes by ensuring documentation meets internal and external review standards

Publish and distribute finalized plan documents in accordance with client and regulatory requirements

Adapt quickly to changing requirements, including last-minute updates during peak enrollment cycles

Workload & Performance Expectations

Manage an average of 30+ document assignments concurrently, increasing significantly during peak periods

Support multiple client groups simultaneously (typically 10–15+ groups at a time)

Handle increased volume during Q4, with up to 60 documents per writer tied to Open Enrollment deadlines

Operate within strict production timelines, particularly leading up to 1/1 effective dates

Maintain a high level of accuracy and quality under tight deadlines

Required Qualifications

Direct experience writing health and welfare benefit plan documents (required)

Strong working knowledge of:

Summary Plan Descriptions (SPDs)

Summaries of Benefits and Coverage (SBCs)

Summaries of Material Modifications (SMMs)

Solid understanding of ERISA and benefits compliance requirements, with the ability to research and apply regulatory guidance

Demonstrated ability to work in a high-volume, deadline-driven environment with strict processes

Exceptional attention to detail, particularly in legal-style writing and documentation accuracy

Strong analytical skills with the ability to review prior documents and identify gaps or inconsistencies

Ability to work independently with minimal training and quickly ramp in a fast-paced environment
