Recreation Leader

The Cupertino Parks and Recreation department is recruiting active and motivated part-time Recreation Leaders to plan and lead activities for our Adventure Camp programs. Under limited supervision, the Recreation Leader assists the Senior Recreation Leader, Summer Staff Assistant, and Recreation Coordinator in planning, organizing, supervising, and leading recreational activities and other related work as required. The Recreation Leader is assigned to the Cupertino Parks and Recreation department and represents the City to the general public. This position emphasizes leadership, mentoring, and customer service. Job duties will vary depending on the program area assigned to. This classification is an entry level position. This is a part-time, at-will, and non-benefited position limited to no more than 995 hours per fiscal year. Important Dates: Mandatory Training June 8 - 12. This is a paid training week. Mandatory workday July 4. Summer programs June 15 - August 7. Receives limited direction from the Recreation Coordinator, Staff Assistants, and Senior Recreation Leader. Engages youth or teens in a variety of positive, fun, and age-appropriate activities. Typical activities include, but are not limited to: arts, crafts, sports, games, trips, contests, and special events. Supervises program participants. Assists with leading activities, programs, and events. Maintains a positive and safe work environment. Encourages participation and facilitates activities. Supports fellow Recreation Leaders and Senior Recreation Leaders and participates in maintenance of facility and equipment. Assist with supervising volunteers. Ensures that the assigned programs meet the needs and interests of the participants. Attend staff meetings and respect departmental policies and procedures. Answer questions and field complaints from customers and refer them to appropriate staff. Performs other duties as required. Knowledge of: Youth and teen games, science experiments, sports, crafts, and other interactive activities are desirable. Safety precautions as they relate to youth and teens desirable. Experience working with special needs youth and teens is highly desirable. Ability to: Understand and follow written and oral instructions. Manage time effectively, show initiative, and work independently. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with teammates, parents, volunteers, and other members of the community. Learn policies and procedures applicable to the operation of the City. Work with a diverse population in a tactful and effective manner. Work and communicate effectively in a team setting. Transport self to and from work. Education and Experience Must be a minimum of 16 years old by June 8, 2026. Customer service experience is a plus. Licenses and Certificates Current CPR and First Aid certification are desirable (CPR and First Aid certification and re-certification will be offered to new employees). Mandatory Training June 8 - 12. This is paid training. Summer programs begin June 15 - August 7. Various Program and Various Program Hours Preschool Adventures Summer Program: Monday through Thursday 8:45 am

12:15 pm at Quinlan Community Center. Additional hours as needed. Adventure Camp Summer Program: Monday through Friday 8:45 am - 5:15 pm at Memorial Park. Work schedules can be flexible. Additional hours as needed. Physical Demands Must be able to stand, sit, bend, squat, climb, kneel, jump, run, twist and reach, and lift and carry weight of 25 pounds or less while coordinating and/or supervising recreation activities.
