Freelance Digital Research Analyst (PolitiFact/Poynter)

PolitiFact, a project of the Poynter Institute, is looking for a sharp, detail-oriented Digital Research Analyst to join our team on a flexible freelance or part-time basis.


This is a unique opportunity to work at the intersection of journalism and technology, helping us evaluate the accuracy of emerging AI systems and analyze digital content for a mission-driven organization dedicated to truth and accountability.


The Details


Term: Now through September 2026 (with potential for renewal).

Hours: We are looking for a minimum commitment of 20 hours per week. (Monday-Friday), though the workload can scale up to 40 hours per week depending on project needs and your availability. We work on East Coast U.S. time.

Location: Fully Remote. We are open to talent regardless of where you are based.

Pay: $30-$35 per hour (commensurate with experience).


What you’ll be doing


You’ll help work on private research projects that protect the integrity of the news ecosystem. Your day-to-day will include:


Investigating AI & social media: Evaluating the accuracy of AI models and analyzing flagged video content for potential misinformation.

Writing & reporting: Conducting quick-turn research and transforming your findings into clear, concise written summaries for our internal teams and clients.

Collaborating: Working alongside our PolitiFact and Poynter teams on various research and editorial initiatives.

Upholding standards: Maintaining the absolute highest levels of fairness, independence, and accuracy.


What we’re looking for


We need a researcher/reporter who is skeptical by nature and methodical in practice. You’ll be a great fit if you have:


Analytical chops: You know how to dig past the surface and find the facts.

Digital savvy: Proficiency with Google Workspace, Slack, and modern digital research tools.

Self-starter mentality: Since this is a remote/freelance role, you must be able to manage your own schedule, hit deadlines, and handle confidential information with total discretion.

Communication skills: You write clearly and can explain complex findings simply.

Background: A degree in journalism (or a related field) is preferred. Multi-language skills are a huge plus!
