Analytical Biomarker Scientist – Proteomics & LC-MS (Metabolomics/Lipidomics)

AIRNA, Cambridge, MA, United States

COMPANY OVERVIEW AIRNA is a biotechnology company with a mission to be the leading RNA editing company delivering precision therapies to patients with rare and common diseases.

AIRNA is harnessing advances in genetics to develop transformative RNA-editing medicines that improve human health. Our proprietary platform is based on groundbreaking research by pioneers of the field and company co-founders Thorsten Stafforst (University of Tübingen) and Jin Billy Li (Stanford University) and enables optimal potency, safety, and delivery. AIRNA is advancing a robust pipeline of therapeutic candidates that are designed to provide functional cures for severe or chronic diseases by repairing harmful genetic variants or introducing beneficial variants promote optimal health.

AIRNA has raised $245 million in financing from a world-class syndicate of investors including Arch Venture Partners, Forbion, Venrock Healthcare Capital Partners, RTW Investments, Nextech Invest, and ND Capital. We value teamwork, resilience, excellence, human, and health, and have a diverse team at both our headquarters in Cambridge, MA and our research operations in Tübingen, Germany.

POSITION SUMMARY:

We are seeking a highly motivated Analytical Biomarker Scientist to support biomarker discovery and translational research using advanced mass spectrometry platforms. The successful candidate will develop, validate, and apply LC-MS–based assays for proteomics, metabolomics, and lipidomics to enable biomarker identification, pharmacodynamic assessment, and disease mechanism studies in preclinical and clinical samples. This role requires strong expertise in sample preparation, LC-MS method development, data analysis, and biomarker interpretation within a multidisciplinary research environment.

Assay Development & Analytical Work Develop and optimize LC-MS/MS assays for proteomics, metabolomics, and lipidomics. Design and execute quantitative and qualitative biomarker assays in biological matrices (plasma, serum, tissue, CSF, etc.). Perform sample preparation workflows including protein digestion, metabolite extraction, and lipid isolation. Operate and maintain high-resolution and triple-quadrupole LC-MS systems. Develop targeted and untargeted mass spectrometry methods for biomarker discovery and validation. Biomarker Discovery & Translational Research Identify and validate protein, metabolite, and lipid biomarkers relevant to disease biology and drug response. Support preclinical and clinical biomarker studies including pharmacodynamic and mechanistic endpoints. Collaborate with biology, clinical, and bioinformatics teams to integrate multi-omics datasets. Data Analysis & Interpretation Process and analyze LC-MS data using appropriate bioinformatics and statistical tools. Perform quantitative analysis and biomarker data interpretation. Maintain data quality and ensure reproducibility of assays. Prepare reports, presentations, and scientific documentation. Collaboration & Project Leadership Work closely with cross-functional teams including biologists, clinicians, and computational scientists. Contribute to study design and experimental strategy for biomarker discovery projects. Present results at internal meetings and external scientific conferences. Support manuscript preparation and regulatory documentation when applicable.

QUALIFICATIONS Education PhD in Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry, Proteomics, Metabolomics, or related field (or MSc with significant relevant experience) Required Experience Hands-on experience with LC-MS/MS instrumentation. Expertise in proteomics workflows (protein extraction, digestion, peptide analysis). Experience with metabolomics and/or lipidomics assays. Experience analyzing complex biological samples. Familiarity with targeted and untargeted mass spectrometry approaches. Preferred Skills Experience with high-resolution MS platforms (e.g., Orbitrap, Q-TOF). Knowledge of biomarker discovery pipelines in translational research. Experience with quantitative MS methods such as MRM/PRM. Familiarity with bioinformatics tools for omics data analysis. Understanding of GLP/GCLP or regulated bioanalysis environments. Key Skills LC-MS method development Proteomics / metabolomics / lipidomics Biomarker discovery and validation Sample preparation and assay optimization Data analysis and statistical interpretation Cross-functional collaboration
