Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume)

Master's degree (foreign equivalent or higher).

Three (3) years of full-time experience in residential life, student affairs, or a related higher education setting.

Supervisory experience (supervision of students may be considered).

Experience with crisis management and early intervention (i.e. on-call for emergency response, conflict mediation, responding to medical or mental health emergencies, fire alarms, etc.).

Must have, keep and maintain the appropriate valid NYS Driver’s License; have a motor vehicle record free from major violations or a pattern of repeat violations.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree (foreign equivalent or higher).

Program administration and/or event management experience.

Student conduct enforcement and/or adjudication experience.

Experience working with graduate student populations.

Experience working with commuter student populations.

Experience with Housing Management systems (e.g., StarRez).

Experience with campus collaboration and program development.

Brief Description of Duties The Assistant Director of Student Life at Southampton provides comprehensive leadership for residential life, student engagement, and community development initiatives serving commuter and residential students. Working within a highly collaborative campus environment, the Assistant Director fosters a community that promotes academic success, personal growth, inclusion, and student well‑being. This role encompasses residential operations management, student staff supervision, conduct administration, crisis response, and partnership with academic and campus stakeholders. It also supports institutional growth initiatives, including the development of P3 workforce housing and the planned hospital expansion, ensuring student life operations are aligned with projected campus expansion. The position requires periodic travel between the Southampton and West Campus locations and participation in an on‑call duty rotation.

Staff Supervision

Recruit, select, supervise, develop, and evaluate student staff, including graduate-level Assistant Coordinators for Student Life, undergraduate and graduate Resident Assistants, and other student employees.

Manage a comprehensive recruitment, selection, training, and development process for student staff.

Support staff in the implementation of departmental programs and community initiatives.

Participate in professional staff recruitment and selection processes.

Recognize and support staff through award nominations and attendance at recognition events.

Facilities and Business Management

Provide oversight of residential facilities operations and serve as the primary liaison to facilities management staff.

Coordinate with maintenance and custodial departments; report and follow up on service requests.

Support resident initiatives for facility improvements and conduct regular facility rounds to promote health, safety, and security.

Oversee Student Center operations and co‑manage the Fitness Center in collaboration with Housing Administration.

Manage the Student Life operating budget, ensuring accurate financial processing, reconciliation, and procurement.

Collaborate with Southampton Housing Administration on space coordination, pre‑arrival communications, and check‑in/check‑out processes.

Assist in the facilitation of summer housing and conference group operations.

Administrative Duties

Support housing operations using the StarRez and Lenel management systems in collaboration with the Southampton Housing Administration team.

Collaborate with Southampton Housing Administration on the student housing application and assignment process.

Direct and oversee office functions, including information dissemination, inventory control, and database management.

Develop and implement policies and procedures aligned with departmental and institutional standards.

Engage actively in partnerships across the Division of Student Affairs and Campus Residences to enhance the residential experience.

Collaborate with Campus Dining to support intentional initiatives and promote dining engagement efforts.

Participate in Division‑sponsored events (e.g., Convocation, Admitted Students’ Day, Homecoming, professional conferences).

Attend all required departmental and divisional training and support ongoing professional development initiatives.

Student Engagement and Support

Maintain a visible and engaged presence in residence halls and across campus, including evenings and weekends.

Serve as the primary advocate and liaison for residential and commuter student needs.

Advise student organizations and leadership initiatives.

Oversee traditions, affinity spaces, and recognition programs that foster belonging and school spirit.

Provide informal counseling, mediation, and referrals to campus and community resources.

Community Standards

Serve as Conduct Officer and/or Appeal Officer for student conduct cases, exercising independent judgment in sanctioning and case resolution across the Southampton campus.

Interpret, apply, and enforce University and residence hall policies.

Direct health and safety inspections and ensure compliance with the Terms of Occupancy and University Conduct Code.

Respond to parental and campus partner inquiries related to student conduct matters.

Crisis and Risk Management

Provide daily oversight of the residential community, proactively mitigating safety and security risks.

Exercise independent judgment in responding to and escalating crisis situations.

Provide 24‑hour support and direction to student staff, responding to and leading crisis situations.

Offer direction to professional and student staff during crisis situations.

Collaborate with University Police, Fire Marshal, Student Support Team, Student Health and Wellness, and other partners in emergency response efforts.

Programming and Community Engagement

Develop, implement, and assess comprehensive programming initiatives for residential and commuter students that enhance engagement, belonging, and retention.

Support and promote campus‑wide traditions and events serving the entire Southampton population.

Partner with campus departments and academic programs to enhance student life beyond the classroom.

Maintain local vendor partnerships to support student engagement efforts.

Academic Collaboration

Collaborate with academic partners to strengthen student success and community engagement.

Design, develop, and implement programs grounded in learning outcomes that support persistence, academic success, and experiential learning.

Provide mentorship and guidance related to academic advising resources and student success strategies.

Committee Responsibilities

Serve as a liaison between Student Life, academic departments, and Southampton campus committees.

Lead and direct departmental standing committees and serve on University committees as needed.

Represent Campus Residences at Southampton admissions‑related events.

Contribute to campus‑wide traditions, programs, and institutional events.

Professional Development and Committee Involvement

Participate in opportunities that promote learning, growth, and development (e.g., classes, training, committee, webinar, etc.).

Contribute to the Division of Student Affairs and Stony Brook University by attending and/or supporting events, activities, and programs sponsored by areas outside of the individual unit/department.

Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.

Evening and weekend work will be required at times.

Special Notes This is a full‑time live‑on appointment. FLSA exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.

Salary 57,151 USD + 4,000 USD Location Pay = 61,151 USD Total Compensation. In addition to the employee's base salary, this position is eligible for 4,000 USD UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly.

Essential Position This has been designated as an essential position based on the duties of the job and the functions performed. Positions that are designated as such may be required to report to work or remain at work even if classes are canceled, and the campus is working on limited operations in an emergency.
