Assistant Director of Residence Life

The Assistant Director of Residence Life (AD) is a professional member of the Residence Life staff within the Division of Student Affairs at Piedmont University. The AD is responsible for all administrative, educational, and supervisory tasks of assigned residential areas. While reporting directly to the Director of Residence Life, the AD has significant interaction and responsibility with all functional areas of the housing operations such as assignments, key management, occupancy reports, and room changes. ADs would be expected to supervise Resident Assistants in their residential area and assist the Director with retention efforts, departmental initiatives, programming, campus partner collaboration, and student judicial processes. Duties of the AD include staff supervision, administrative duties, staff recruitment/selection/training, stimulating the development of educational, social, and personal growth programs as well as promoting the safety and welfare of all residents and referring students to campus resources. This is a live-in, 12-month position. A furnished, on-campus apartment with a full kitchen within the assigned area is provided. Meals can be purchased through Dining Services at the faculty/staff rate. The AD is allowed one (1) pet, pending all documentation to verify ownership and pet well-being is submitted and approved in advance. Provides leadership for all aspects of our residence life program and community, comprised of approximately 750+ students living in ten traditional, suite-style halls and campus apartments. Oversees and develops effective policies and procedures to ensure a safe, healthy, and developmental learning community among the various residential areas of Piedmont University. Oversees recruitment, selection, training, and supervision of at least four part-time Residence Life Student staff positions. Helps create a positive community environment in which students assume responsibility for their actions and creates a strong community that shows appreciation and respect for diversity. Responsible for the administration of a residential area that includes facility inspections, assignment changes, housing floor plans upkeep, key audits, and maintenance referrals. Actively maintain appropriate staff resources including the Residence Life training guide(s) and provide creative and logistical support for community development strategies, as needed. Engage with students daily and in an ongoing way by living in a furnished apartment within the residence halls. Manages and maintains housing databases & reports Assists the Director with occupancy and other housing operations including the turnover of vacant rooms, room changes, key management, and effective security systems. Assist the Director with departmental assessment efforts including satisfaction surveys and student retention. Serves as liaison between Student Life, Admissions, Campus Facilities, and Campus Police as they relate to maintenance, student events, projects and initiatives, and residential issues. Assists with the room selection, assignment, and transition process for all residential students. Supervises the residential programming model including program approval, reviewing program proposals, providing program feedback, tracking program requirements, managing programming budget, making programming purchases, and implementing large-scale departmental programming. Provides retention support by working to identify students whose behaviors indicate a lack of academic success strategies and refer students for academic skills assistance, including tutoring, counseling, and/or career guidance. Coordinates and documents conferences or referrals to appropriate offices and through the recognized retention management system. Follows up on student progress through personal contact and correspondence, documents and tracks student issues. Assesses skills and development of students while providing experiences, opportunities, and training to challenge and support their development. Investigate and respond to concerns and complaints promptly providing accurate information with a student-focused mindset that encourages positive public and community relations. Serves as a conduct officer for residential student violations of campus conduct policies, including holding judicial meetings, and adjudicating violations. Maintains judicial records and accurate student files. Participates in the rotating “on-call” system for the residential area, responding to emergencies on evenings and weekends. Maintains a 20-minute response time to campus while on‑call. This may include times when Piedmont University is closed (i.e. Fall Break, Holidays, Winter Break, Spring Break, and Summer). Complete any other tasks, duties, or responsibilities assigned by the Director of Residence Life. This is a “live-in” position, and the Assistant Director of Residence Life will reside in an assigned residence hall. Other relevant duties as assigned. Regular and predictable attendance is required. On-site work is required. Incumbents must remain relevant in the area of employment and flexible to changes in work related to institutional needs. Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree in Education, Marketing/Communication, Counseling, Human Development, or related field. Master's degree is preferred. Experience related to residence life, judicial affairs, and student life areas is preferred. Experience with online housing and/or retention software (i.e. eRezLife, Starfish) is preferred. Experience with small, liberal arts colleges, either professionally or educationally, is preferred. Licenses and Certification

Valid Georgia Driver’s License (or obtained within 30 days of hire date) and satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

An established record of excellent leadership and mentoring relationships with students, collegial relationships with staff and faculty, and strong written and oral communication skills, particularly with students and their parents, are preferred. Consistent and thorough organizational and management skills are essential for success in this role. Ability to work in a diverse and inclusive environment collaboratively and effectively navigate changing circumstances that come with working in Residence Life. ENVIRONMENTAL, PHYSICAL, and VISUAL ACUITY FACTORS

Incumbents of this position's work environment will include being subject to inside environmental conditions, outside environmental conditions, atmospheric such as fumes, odors, dust, and gases, and at times they may be exposed to infectious disease. The physical factors of this positions require incumbents to climb such as ascending or descending ladders, stairs, ramps, and the like using feet and legs/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized; Maintain body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing, or crouching on narrow, slippery or erratically moving surfaces; kneel by bending legs at knees to come to a rest on knee or knees, crouch by bending the body downward and forward by bending legs and spine; crawl by moving about on hands and knees or hands and feet; reach, by extending hands and arms in any direction; stand or remain upright on the feet; walk or move around on foot to accomplish tasks; pull using upper extremities to exert force to draw, drag, haul, or tug objects; lift or raise objects from a lower position to a higher position; talk or express and exchange ideas by means of the spoken word; and hear or perceive the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction and having the ability to receive detailed information through oral communication. This position requires light work such as exerting up to 20lbs of force occasionally and/or up to 10lbs of force more frequently. Incumbents will be required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as preparing or analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer screen; and extensive reading; visual inspection.
