Required Qualifications
Master’s degree (foreign equivalent or higher degree).
Three (3) years of full-time experience working with undergraduates in academic advising or student services at a college or university.
Experience coordinating projects, programs, and/or events.
Preferred Qualifications
Professional experience working with first-year and/or second-year students.
Professional experience working in academic advising.
Staff supervision experience in a higher education setting (may consider supervision of students and/or professional staff).
Experience with University technology systems (i.e., PeopleSoft, Navigate, Degreeworks, and SLATE).
Experience in teaching an undergraduate seminar or student development related classes.
Experience leading student success, retention, and/or graduation initiatives in the college setting.
Brief Description of Duties As a member of the Undergraduate Colleges (UGC) leadership team, the Assistant Director assists in the management and administrative direction of Stony Brook University’s central first-year, second-year, and international student advising center. The incumbent will work specifically with our international advising staff to oversee international student academic advising from first year through graduation. Under the direction of the Assistant Dean for Academic Advising and the UGC Associate Director, the Assistant Director participates in the coordination of advising operations and academic planning, new student registration, academic initiatives, assessment, trainings, communications, and programming efforts for the department. The Assistant Director regularly interacts with faculty, staff, students, and other University areas, such as academic advising units, academic departments, global affairs, student affairs, and enrollment management, to support program development and continual improvement.
To thrive in this position, the Assistant Director must demonstrate flexibility, responsiveness, collaboration, and problem solving skills. The incumbent must be able to work independently or in a group setting, have strong written and verbal communication skills, and maintain up-to-date knowledge of university policies and best practices.
Administration and Supervision As part of the UGC leadership team, has day-to-day administrative responsibility for center operations, including oversight of advising and programmatic operations of their assigned team.
Provides leadership in broader departmental efforts, including monitoring course enrollment and academic needs as well as contributing to the development and assessment of advising technologies (e.g. the Advising Planning Form and Navigate).
Provides oversight for new student enrollment, assessment, student success initiatives, and administrative functions for their assigned area.
Supervise Academic Advising Staff and graduate assistants, as assigned. Supervisory and staff development responsibilities include hiring and onboarding, training and development, performance evaluations and the overall promotion of an inclusive and innovative work environment for professional and student staff.
Present to various constituencies on behalf of UGC, including students, parents, faculty, and staff, and participates in unit efforts at university events. In the absence of management, the incumbent may act as the next level supervisor.
Leads departmental efforts around an assigned area, providing support to the Associate Director with central operations. Assigned areas may include, but are not limited to, overseeing advising operations, assessment, or enrollment initiatives.
Academic Advising & Orientation Provides high quality, pro-active academic advising to assigned upperclass and/or transfer students, as needed. This includes regular communication with students across multiple modalities, and active support, follow-up, and strategies for success either individually or in a group setting.
Assist in coordination and implementation of orientation sessions for incoming new transfer students. Participate in student orientation and opening weekend programs (i.e. Admitted Students Day) in January and the summer.
Serves as a drop-in/walk-in advisor, as needed.
Oversee the advising follow-up to students on academic standing.
May serve as the instructor for one section of a student success seminar, as needed.
Committee Involvement and Divisional Support Represents the Undergraduate Colleges/DUE on University committees and at University events/functions. Supports the Division broadly and may assist with Division of Undergraduate Education priorities, serving on search committees or other Divisional committees as charged.
Represents the department at University committees and groups, and participates in relevant University functions. This may include participation on retention-related teams or academic advising committees.
Serve as a liaison for the department with many other units, such as other academic advising areas, academic departments, student affairs, and enrollment management. Supports the Division broadly and may assist with Division of Undergraduate Education priorities, serving on search committees or other Divisional committees as charged.
Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.
Additional Information This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.
In addition to the employee's base salary, this position is eligible for $4000 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly.
