Human Resources Director
The City of Commerce City is seeking a strategic and collaborative Human Resources Director to lead the City's people-focused initiatives and support a workforce of approximately 500 full-time and 500 part-time employees. This role provides leadership and oversight for the City's human resources, benefits, wellness, safety, and risk management programs while guiding key initiatives across talent acquisition, employee relations, compensation and classification, onboarding, training and development, and performance management. Through thoughtful policy development and innovative programs, the Director helps cultivate a workplace culture where employees are supported, engaged, and equipped to deliver exceptional service to the community. Reporting to the Assistant City Manager and serving as a key member of the City's leadership team, the Human Resources Director partners with department leaders to align workforce strategies with organizational goals. The Director advises leadership on complex employee relations matters, oversees compliance with employment laws and regulations, and leads initiatives that strengthen employee engagement, professional development, and organizational effectiveness. This role also guides major projects, including personnel policy modernization, implementation of a performance management system, employee engagement initiatives, and compensation and classification reviews. Compensation and Benefits: The expected annual starting salary range for this role is $172,000 to $192,000, depending on the successful candidate's qualifications. The City offers an extensive benefits package, including an 8% 401A match and up to 3% deferred comp match. Learn more here. Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Human Resources or related field and a minimum of ten years of experience in human resource functions. Three years of progressively responsible supervisory/managerial experience. Must possess a valid driver's license. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered. SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR, or SPHR Certification and local government are ideal, but not required.
