Overview

This is a full‑time, FLSA‑exempt position with the Carson City Public Defender Office, located in Carson City, Nevada. The recruitment may fill a Deputy Public Defender I or Deputy Public Defender II position depending on qualifications. Deputy Public Defender I

Under general supervision, performs a wide range of professional criminal defense work, including legal research, representation of indigent defendants in criminal cases and NRS 432B proceedings, and related responsibilities. This is the first level in the Public Defender series, expected to handle a broad spectrum of legal assignments performed by the office. Deputy Public Defender II

Under general supervision, performs a wide range of professional criminal defense work. Incumbents are expected to handle more complex matters, a higher volume of cases, and assignments requiring greater experience and knowledge. This is the second level in the Deputy Public Defender series. Salary Ranges

Deputy Public Defender I: $83,884.24 – $117,715.81 annually (Employer‑Paid Retirement) Deputy Public Defender II: $101,290.23 – $138,767.52 annually (Employer‑Paid Retirement) To learn more about the Nevada Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS), consult the official resources. Responsibilities

Review criminal complaints and analyze propriety of charges. Conduct client interviews and coordinate investigations. Analyze facts, legal precedents, and prepare preliminary hearing motions. Interpret and apply laws, court decisions, and other authorities in case preparation. Conduct arraignments, preliminary hearings, and trials. Assemble evidence and legal materials for trial or settlement negotiations. Prepare pleadings, briefs, and appellate submissions. Carry out probation, parole revocation, extradition, and insanity procedures. Represent clients in family court and related proceedings. Coordinate with the District Attorney’s office and law‑enforcement agencies. Meet with clients and discuss cases. Represent parties in termination of parental rights and guardianship cases. Demonstrate courteous and cooperative behavior with clients, public, and staff. Promote a harmonious and effective workplace. Contribute to division efficiency by suggesting improvements and participating in teams. Education and Experience

Deputy Public Defender I: Juris Doctorate and admission to practice law in Nevada. Preferred experience in criminal defense. Deputy Public Defender II: Juris Doctorate, admission to practice law in Nevada, and a minimum of three years full‑time experience as a Deputy Public Defender or equivalent combination. Required Certificates, Licenses & Registrations

Valid driver’s license. Current membership in the Nevada State Bar required. Required Knowledge and Skills

Judicial procedure and rules of evidence; applicable laws, codes, regulations. Computer applications for legal research and writing. Techniques for dealing with diverse individuals, including confrontational or strained relations. Business English, including correct spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Knowledge of Nevada statutes and their application to criminal and civil law. Principles of criminal, constitutional, and administrative law. Legal research methods and available research programs. Budget preparation and fiscal accounting principles. Perform a regular caseload with considerable independence. Analyze facts and apply legal principles to specific cases. Perform legal research, develop legal issues, and present clear arguments. Communicate effectively, orally and in writing. Maintain effective working relationships. Represent the Public Defender’s Office in contacts with public, community organizations, law enforcement, and other government jurisdictions. Supervision

Under general supervision. Incumbents receive assignments and objectives governed by specific work methods. The responsibility for achieving objectives rests with a superior, with regular supervision checks. Physical Demands & Working Environment

This is an unclassified position (At‑Will employment). Continued employment requires active maintenance of required licenses and certificates. Employees may be required to work during emergencies, including non‑traditional schedules. Incident Command System training may be required. New employees must submit to a fingerprint‑based background investigation and drug screen, with associated costs to the employee.
