Writer/Digital Content Specialist
Job Summary
The University of South Carolina’s Division of Marketing seeks a Writer/Digital Content Specialist. Working with the director of audience engagement, the writer is a key contributor to owned content and establishes best practices for email marketing. The role includes writing articles for owned media channels, managing a vibrant content calendar for USC’s newsletters, ensuring consistent messaging and university style, and providing engaging storytelling across print and digital platforms.
Responsibilities
Write stories on a regular basis for university digital outlets and print publications, including alumni and faculty/staff magazines, USC Today faculty/staff newsletter, sc.edu, and other initiatives.
Establish and maintain guidelines and best practices for the faculty/staff newsletter USC Today, producing Wednesday editions and proofreading M‑W‑Fri versions.
Manage content flow in Basecamp, updating status and moving content cards through planning stages.
Approve and manage web story entries in the CMS, ensuring appropriate photo usage, SEO optimization, university style, and tagging.
Manage the Inside Carolina alumni newsletter, coordinating layout, image sizing, promotion of Inside Carolina video, and distribution.
Minimum Required Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in a related field and 3+ years of experience (or equivalent combination of certification, training, education, and experience).
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in public relations, marketing, journalism, English, media arts, communications or related field.
Five years experience in creating online communications and engaging audiences online.
Strong writing, editing and verbal communication skills.
Proficiency with content management systems, email marketing and social media.
Project management experience and ability to manage multiple projects under tight deadlines.
Strong problem‑solving skills and passion for aligning brand standards with audience needs.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
Excellent writing, communication and organizational skills.
Understanding of web, email and social media publishing.
Proven planning, time‑management and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work in a rapid‑response team environment.
Desire to develop professionally and stay current with communications trends.
Ability to develop concepts and write copy in a variety of styles.
Ability to edit for style, clarity, brand standards and proofread accurately.
Preferred experience in higher education settings.
Capability to write for print, web, social media and video.
Ability to rewrite text from other sources to meet content marketing standards.
Job Duties and Time Allocation
Writing – 35%: stories for digital outlets and print publications, establishing contact throughout the community for story ideas.
Management and oversight of USC Today – 20%: produce Wed edition, proofread M‑W‑Fri editions.
Managing Basecamp content planning – 15%: update status, move content cards to support USC Today schedule.
Managing Inside Carolina newsletter – 10%: coordination of layout, image sizing, promotion, and distribution.
