Position Summary Washburn Center for Children is seeking a dynamic Associate Director of Institutional Giving (ADIG) to expand fundraising opportunities that support children and families in their mental health journey. This role focuses on primarily securing contributions from institutions and foundations and bringing innovative strategies to grow the pipeline on the local, regional, and national stage—ensuring our clinicians have the resources needed to provide high-quality care and instill hope in building a stronger, more resilient community.

The Associate Director of Institutional Giving will develop and implement strategies to deepen donor engagement and increase financial support. They will proactively seek new funding opportunities while strengthening existing funder relationships to enhance giving and overall donor experience.

Responsibilities Grant Writing and Proposal Development (50%)

Develop and implement strategies to secure foundation financial support and increase awareness

Maintain a robust portfolio between 60-75 prospects balanced along the donor continuum of identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship

Author high‑level case statements, proposals, letters of request, and impact reports designed to cultivate, solicit, and steward funders to reach fundraising goals

Create compelling, high‑quality cases for support to reach fundraising goals

Collaborate with the Chief Development Officer and Major Gifts Officer to create comprehensive strategies for current and prospective funders

Advance depth of relationships with funders to grow additional multi‑year, 6‑figure commitments

Complete 15 meaningful touchpoints per month with prospects and funders to bring them closer to the mission

Build out opportunities with new funders on the local, regional, and national level

Revive lapsed donor pool to increase possibilities of future support

Establish and/or enhance key connections with community partners and stakeholders integral to Washburn Center’s opportunities for growth

Prioritize visibility in the communities Washburn serves through participation in events, meetings, and networking

Project Management and Stakeholder Relationships (30%)

Oversee the grants life cycle in its entirety with all funders

Develop and maintain master calendar plan for timely funding requests and required reports to institutional funders

Conduct regular check ins with lead clinical staff, finance department, and gift officers to properly track gifts and activities for reconciliation and reporting purposes

Serve as lead with internal departments, external constituents, and funding bodies to facilitate seamless communication and collaboration experience

Enlist participation of development and clinical team members, CEO, leadership, and volunteers as appropriate in prospect meetings, agency tours, and events

Monitor progress of funded projects, prepare financial and narrative reports for funders, and ensure all required documentation is submitted on time

Maintain accurate records of grant activities, ensuring all documentation is complete and compliant

Deliver appropriate information for data analysis and reporting purposes

Utilize Raiser’s Edge database to manage contacts, moves, and relationships, track funding requests including opportunities, strategies, and deadlines

Agency Support (20%)

Maintain a working knowledge of all Washburn Center’s programs and projects

Work closely with administrators and program staff to develop the case for support, funding options, and strategies that will result in program funding

Conduct ongoing discussions with program directors to stay up on emerging agency needs to grow services and secure support

Partner with Washburn team members, Board of Trustees, and CEO to lead strategy sessions regarding the cultivation, solicitation, and/or stewardship of institutional prospects and funders

Participate as a thought leader in regular development team meetings, appropriate program meetings, and in other spaces that support overall fundraising efforts

Assist in the development and implementation of annual and multi‑year fundraising plans

Partner with the development team and Director of Marketing and Communications regarding content to feature in Annual Fund materials, Impact Reports, direct mail and other solicitations, and acknowledgment letters

Partner in major aspects of overall development fundraising activities, including donor cultivation, stewardship and solicitation, and corporate sponsorship recruitment for special events

Actively participate in the development team’s prospect identification process to ensure progress is planned and measured for major gifts prospects, including written prospect management plans with primary contacts, planned cultivation steps, and proposed solicitation team and schedule

General Team Responsibilities

Facilitate positive and effective communication with all staff, volunteers, and external stakeholders on behalf of the agency and development department

Participate in both agency‑wide and development‑driven events (such as Golf Classic and Dawn of Hope) to provide support and enhance positive outcomes for Washburn Center

Maintain open exchange of communication with team members; participate in regular team and individual meetings

Remain current on funding opportunities by reading philanthropic resources and periodicals provided by the agency and routed by team members

Perform any other duties as deemed necessary by the Chief Development Officer relating to the development and external relations activities of the agency

Occasional attendance at evening and weekend events and willingness to travel mostly within the region

Requirements

Minimum of ten years of successful development experience with demonstrated success in major gifts cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship is required

Knowledge of the local, regional, and corporate foundation community is required

Nonprofit experience is preferred

Database management experience (Raiser’s Edge) preferred is required

Must have reliable transportation, and if using personal vehicle, a valid driver’s license and auto insurance

A Bachelor’s degree is required

A Masters degree is preferred

Proven ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines

Professional Enhancements This position is encouraged to participate in relevant professional associations. Professional development funds are available for seminars/workshops offered through GPA, MAP, AFP, and the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits.
