Job Description The University of California San Francisco implements California’s Child Youth Behavioral Health Initiative (CYBHI) Behavioral Health (BH) Consult Program, as part of the state’s Master Plan for Kids’ Mental Health. The BH Consult Program aims to advance health equity by increasing access to quality, evidence-based, culturally responsive mental and behavioral health care for all of California’s children and youth 0-25.

Housed within the UCSF Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, the Communication Specialist provides operational and administrative support for program communication and outreach activities. This role assists with implementing communication tasks across multiple channels, including website updates, email distribution, event support, and content preparation.

Content and Materials Support

Assist with updating and reformatting program resources and materials to align with UCSF brand guidelines.

Gather routine information from program staff to support communication needs.

Draft and edit basic materials such as announcements, brief articles, event notices, listserv messages, and post-event communications.

Prepare content drafts for newsletters, conference materials, and social media, following established templates and direction.

Identify routine content updates and elevate complex communication needs to supervisor.

Website and Digital Content Maintenance

Update and maintain departmental website content using UCSF-approved content management systems.

Post routine announcements, events, and resource updates.

Review web content for accuracy and outdated information; coordinate updates with program staff and faculty.

Support website content refresh efforts related to rebranding or program changes.

Ensure content follows basic accessibility, formatting, and plain language standards.

Outreach and Distribution Support

Maintain and update departmental listservs and distribution lists.

Prepare and distribute routine outreach communications for programs, events, and initiatives.

Assist with pre-event and post-event communications.

Maintain and organize stakeholder and media contact lists.

Event and Conference Support

Provide communications support for conferences, expos, and outreach events.

Assist with coordinating outreach-related meetings with internal staff or external partners.

Prepare and assemble informational materials, fact sheets, and communication packets.

May attend events or conferences to support outreach activities and gather content, as assigned.

Records and Administrative Support

Maintain organized files of communication materials, photographs, statistics, and reports.

Track communications activities and maintain basic records of outreach efforts and distributions.

Compile routine information for internal reporting.

Maintain strict confidentiality and comply with UCSF privacy and information security requirements.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Strong written and editing skills for routine communications.

Ability to maintain accurate, organized, and user-friendly web content.

Ability to work independently under general supervision.

Strong interpersonal and customer service skills.

Demonstrated professionalism, discretion, and commitment to confidentiality.

Qualifications Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in communications, Public Relations, Marketing, Journalism, English, or a related field; or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.

Experience providing administrative or operational support in communications, outreach, marketing, or events.

Experience updating website content using a content management system or similar tool.

Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple tasks.

Ability to follow established procedures, templates, and brand guidelines.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience working in a higher education, academic medical center, or healthcare environment.

Experience managing email distribution systems or listservs.

Experience using Canva or similar design tools.

Basic knowledge of web accessibility (WCAG) and plain language practices.

Experience supporting conferences, community outreach, or public events.

Salary Information The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy. Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF.
