Description
Under the general direction from the Recreation Supervisor, the Recreation Specialist – Camp is responsible for assisting the Recreation Supervisor to oversee the department’s Mill Valley Camp summer program and ensure the smooth operation of programming for Preschool to 6th Grade camp programs on-site. This position requires a high level of customer service, attention to detail, management of approximately 20-25 part-time staff, and evaluation and oversight of programs.
The ideal candidate will have significant experience working in camp programs in a fast‑paced and dynamic setting. A bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in early childhood education, recreation, or a related field with a minimum of two years of experience in delivering kindergarten, elementary, and/or youth programming is preferred.

Job Definition Communicate with participants, part‑time staff, and parents; coordinate camp schedules; plan and organize camp daily activities, program registrations, and overall program needs for the Preschool‑6th grade Camp Thrill Valley programs. Hours are approximately 40 hours per week (Monday‑Friday) while camp is in session from June 15 – August 7, 2026, and approximately 20‑25 hours per week in preparation for the start of camp. Ideal start date is April 1, 2026.
Examples of Duties
Facilitates camp activities for ages 18 months to 12 years old.
Organizes, implements, directs, supervises, and/or promotes specific programs and activities.
Participates in the preparation and administration of assigned camp budgets.
Communicates clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Demonstrates excellent customer service and communicates effectively with staff, parents, and children.
Monitors the day‑to‑day operations of the camps, including assisting in administrative paperwork (health forms, swim lesson schedules), check‑in and check‑out of participants, setting up outdoor equipment, handling and resolving complaints not requiring the attention of a supervisor, and ensuring that programs and events have required materials, staff, and supplies.
Assists in the evaluation of programming, including conducting customer satisfaction surveys and analyzing reports on program effectiveness.
Enforces safety and operating procedures and provides for maintenance needs, including compliance with health and safety codes.
Accurately maintains attendance records.
The ability to speak English clearly and understandably.
Perform related duties as required.
Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
Training & Experience Any combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge and abilities.
