Resident Director (RD) Position The Resident Director (RD) position is a live‑in, one‑year contract role with the option of four additional one‑year extensions. The position focuses on student development, student staff supervision, training, community connections, and program management.

The RD engages with a diverse resident cohort that may include first‑year undergraduates, transfers, re‑entry students, couples, children, and extended family members. Working as part of a 3–4 person team, the RD collaborates to manage an area housing approximately 1,500–3,500 residents, supports basic needs, cultivates healthy and respectful community environments, promotes student success, and mediates conflicts.

Key responsibilities include recruiting, selecting, training, supervising, and evaluating student staff; planning, implementing, and assessing programs; navigating difficult situations and making appropriate referrals; and fostering an inclusive multicultural residential environment. The RD also serves on departmental committees in evolving capacities.

Qualifications Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in psychology, communication, sociology, or a related field (or equivalent experience/training).

Experience working with student transition issues in a university housing setting or similar higher‑education environment.

Supervisory experience in recruiting, selecting, training, supervising, and evaluating student staff; experience in planning, implementing, and assessing programs.

Experience confronting diverse difficult situations and making appropriate referrals for counseling or disciplinary action.

Experience supporting students within diverse communities.

Demonstrated written and oral communication skills for correspondence, group facilitation, training sessions, and public speaking.

Proficiency with technology and managing software such as Outlook, Word, Excel, Google Drive, budgeting tools, programming, and counseling databases.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree in student personnel, higher‑education administration, educational leadership, or counseling.

Experience providing equity and inclusion training and development.

Initiative to work independently and collaboratively.

Ability to efficiently collect, analyze, and synthesize information.

Knowledge of assessment techniques to gauge student and staff needs and interests.

Department Overview Student Housing and Dining Services (SHDS) is a self‑supporting auxiliary that provides housing and dining services to approximately 15,000 undergraduate and graduate students, including those with families, living in on‑campus residential facilities. SHDS also offers residential, retail, and catering dining services for the campus community and provides student support and conference housing services to the broader community. Special Requirements

This critical position requires a criminal background check, drug screening, medical evaluation clearance, and functional capacity assessment.

The role is designated as a mandated reporter under CANRA and UC policy, with added compliance training.
