Position Summary Reporting to the Vice President, Audubon Vermont, the Manager, Conservation Policy will assist in designing and implementing a tri‑partisan policy agenda at the state and/or federal levels, with a near‑term focus on habitat conservation, land use, community resiliency, and service‑learning opportunities. The Manager will work collaboratively with Audubon Vermont staff and national conservation strategy and policy leadership to drive successful implementation of laws, policies, and funding opportunities that enhance biodiversity protection, promote resilient communities, foster proactive land‑use and habitat conservation, recover threatened species, and equip landowners with tools to maintain healthy wildlife populations.

The Manager will build and maintain working relationships with external partners and stakeholders, including:

State and federal legislators

State and federal agencies

Diverse partners

Compensation $62,000 – $70,000 per year.

Essential Functions

Serve as a member of Audubon Vermont’s policy and engagement team and act as a key advisor on Vermont‑based policy initiatives.

Oversee aspects of the conservation policy program, including strategic planning, goal setting, and policy advocacy.

Guide day‑to‑day efforts to track the policy agenda in Vermont, aligning the program with the organization’s strategic priorities.

Coordinate partners and coalitions in the state and mobilize chapter, grassroots, and community support for key policy priorities.

Engage key stakeholders, including government officials, to advance conservation and service‑learning efforts.

Lobby Vermont legislators, federal and state agencies, and other officials to advance conservation and service‑learning objectives.

Stay abreast of local, state, and federal legislative and administrative affairs affecting Audubon’s conservation agenda.

Raise Audubon Vermont’s profile and visibility as a leader in conservation policy efforts.

Identify new opportunities for policy and advocacy engagement and act as an advocate for Audubon’s legislative and regulatory priorities.

Collaborate with policy interns and mentor as appropriate.

Collaborate with Audubon’s national policy team on policy issues and develop strong working relationships with staff across the Audubon network.

Work with regional leadership, program staff, and center leadership to integrate policy and advocacy opportunities into programs and volunteer efforts.

Advocate for policy priorities while building equitable coalitions representative of a broad set of communities.

Participate in an organizational culture fostering cooperation, communication, teamwork, and trust.

Ensure equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging principles are incorporated in all work.

Support a culture of philanthropy, including public funding efforts.

Collaborate with colleagues across the Americas on shared priorities.

The position is represented by the Communication Workers of America (CWA).

Qualifications and Experience

Bachelor’s Degree in public policy, political science, natural resource management, wildlife conservation, or a related field (required). A master’s degree is preferred.

Five or more years of relevant experience working in government, legislative, or nonprofit settings.

Keen understanding of current policy trends in Vermont related to climate change, wildlife, land management, and conservation.

Experience applying knowledge and scientific research to successful policy advocacy and implementation.

Personal desire to build durable public support for conservation issues and engage with Vermont legislators.

Experience working in partnerships and collaborative environments.

Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds, and incorporating multiple community perspectives into decision‑making.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to synthesize technical information for varied audiences.

Commitment to Audubon’s mission of conserving birds, wildlife, and habitats, and ability to communicate that mission effectively.

Willingness and ability to travel across the state and elsewhere, including some weekends and evenings.
