Logistics Exempt, 38 hour/week position. Flexible schedule, some evenings and weekends required.
Position Overview This position is responsible for assisting consumers and/or students who have lost the ability to travel independently. The O & M Specialist provides white cane travel training, teaches consumers how to access public transportation, orients consumers to areas of their choice, and assists in meeting IEP requirements. The specialist attends IEP meetings, assesses new students, and re-evaluates previous students' progress.
Expected Results
A minimum of 65 active consumers receiving O&M training annually.
Consumers will accomplish 70% of the goals established.
80% will show improvement between pre and post training evaluation.
An improvement for 60% of those served in terms of their ability to travel independently.
60% of active consumers per year gain access to public transportation.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Conduct initial assessment to determine consumers' individual needs.
Assist consumers in developing service goals.
Provide orientation and mobility training.
Track and monitor consumer progress.
Provide information and referral assistance.
Conduct post assessment to determine consumers' accomplishments.
Complete required reporting to contract agencies.
Conduct public education and awareness activities.
Provide community organizations with training related to Orientation & Mobility.
Assist in promoting fee-generated Orientation & Mobility services.
Activate, track and inactivate consumer files according to policies & procedures.
Maintain accurate and up-to-date consumer files.
Track community activities and referral contacts.
Provide customers with evaluation and progress reports.
Recommend purchase of Orientation & Mobility aids and equipment.
Generate a minimum yearly of 1,761 billable hours.
Timely submission of billing.
Administrative and Clerical Duties
Support administrative functions and maintain documentation.
Personnel/Supervisory Responsibilities Employee does not have any personnel duties. No supervisory responsibilities.
Qualifications, Requirements and Demands
Master’s degree (M.A.) in Orientation and Mobility from an accredited college or university, or equivalent combination of education and experience to qualify for certification as an Orientation & Mobility Specialist.
Preferred: qualified person with a disability.
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, policy manuals and procedure manuals.
Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, and/or other community entities.
Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers and community groups.
Mathematical skills: ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide, calculate figures, percentages and ratios.
Reasoning ability: define problems, collect data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions.
Interpersonal skills: work cooperatively with volunteers, board members, staff, management and the public.
Physical demands: regular communication, use of hands, regular sitting, standing, walking, occasional lifting up to 20 lbs.
Equipment operation: use fax, copy machines, computer network, software.
Travel requirements: ability to travel within the League’s service region and occasionally in interstate region.
Work environment: exposure to fumes or airborne particles, outdoor weather conditions, moderate noise level.
Certification: from the relevant licensing bodies for Orientation & Mobility Specialist.
