Drayton provides comprehensive anthropological support throughout the Northwest on a wide variety of cultural resource management projects in compliance with Section 106, the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), Washington State Environmental Policy Act (SEPA), Washington Governor’s EO 2102, and applicable local regulatory requirements.

The Opportunity We are seeking a qualified Field Director to provide archaeological support for our rapidly growing Cultural Resources Management firm in Blaine, WA. This is a full-time permanent position with benefits. While our HQ is in Blaine, we serve across WA state, and candidates don't have to reside in Blaine. The start date is immediately.

The Field Director will provide leadership and oversight to Field Technicians (Levels I and II). This position includes a combination of office and field activities, including oversight and management of project budget and expenditures, and coordination with the Principal Investigator and Deputy Principal Investigator to develop project goals and objectives. The Field Director will generate and peer review deliverables in compliance with the Washington State Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation (DAHP) standards. Responsibilities also include identifying, documenting, monitoring, and protecting cultural resources; managing cultural resources artifacts, records, and geographic information; participating in pre‑contact and historical research efforts; and working with landowners, government agencies, tribes, and stakeholders.

Job Duties

Conduct and manage all aspects of fieldwork for Phase I, II, and III projects.

Supervise one or more crews of Field Technicians during a survey, site recording, data collection, monitoring, or excavation projects.

In collaboration with the Senior Archaeologist, supervises and supports data collection, analysis, and compilation for final reports for the PI and Deputy PI to finalize.

Supervises field teams to ensure sound fieldwork methods, data collection, and project delivery in alignment with SOPs.

In collaboration with the Project Manager and the Senior Archaeologist, supports project planning, implementation, and team support.

Timely submission of report drafts and assets to the Editing Team in alignment with internal quality standards and processes.

Supports project and report writing progress by helping team members with resources and assets necessary for report submission and writing (e.g., helping with maps, photos, research, etc.) as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Eligibility for listing as a Registered Archaeologist or Registered Professional Archaeologist.

At least one year of experience (more preferred) participating in cultural resources survey, Basic GPS/GIS recordation, and construction monitoring.

Have a self‑directed and organized work ethic with the ability to work independently and communicate with project managers, clients, and field crews.

Excellent written communication and organizational skills with the ability to synthesize a wide range of data and meet deadlines.

Available for travel throughout Washington (rare chance of Oregon, Idaho, and Alaska).

Ability to manage work time efficiently and complete projects on time and within scope/budget.

A history of stable work attendance, punctuality, a positive attitude, and reliable transportation.

Ability to hike and excavate in rough and difficult terrain, at times in adverse conditions.

Knowledge of Microsoft Suite.

BA in Anthropology, Archaeology (or relevant field); MA preferred.

Knowledge of Pacific Northwest site/artifact types, field methods, and soils throughout the coast and plateau.

Particular knowledge in historic and pre‑contact materials and the built environment.

Experience in identifying human remains.

Salary & Benefits The salary range is between $28 - $36/hr DOE.
