Overview

The Golf Course Superintendent is responsible for the maintenance, turf management, and overall playing conditions of the Palmer Municipal Golf Course and associated grounds. This position oversees turfgrass management programs, irrigation systems, equipment maintenance, and grounds staff to ensure safe, well-maintained, high-quality playing surfaces adapted to Alaska’s climate and growing conditions. The Golf Course Superintendent is distinguished by leadership, expertise in turfgrass and agronomy, and the ability to manage all aspects of golf course operations. This role requires strong organizational skills, strategic planning, and decision-making to maintain high-quality course conditions year-round. Monitor turf health and adjust cultural practices based on seasonal weather and growth conditions. Oversee mowing, fertilization, aeration, topdressing, overseeding, and integrated pest management. Maintain greens, tees, fairways, roughs, bunkers, and landscaped areas to high-quality standards. Maintain detailed records of maintenance activities, chemical applications, equipment maintenance, staffing, and weather conditions. Assist with budgeting, capital planning, and resource allocation for course maintenance. Manage seasonal turf recovery, including spring growth and fall/winter preparation. Operate, maintain, and monitor irrigation systems, pump stations, and drainage infrastructure. Coordinate course setup and maintenance for tournaments, events, and daily play. Schedule irrigation to meet turf needs efficiently and sustainably. Supervise maintenance and repair of turf maintenance equipment and vehicles. Maintain maintenance facilities in a safe, organized, and functional condition. Perform additional duties as assigned to support course operations and management goals. Qualifications

Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Turfgrass Management, Agronomy, Horticulture, Environmental Science, or related field (experience may substitute). Three (3) to five (5) years of experience in golf course maintenance or turf management. Experience maintaining turf in cold climates and short growing seasons. Pesticide applicator certification. Knowledge of irrigation systems and turf maintenance equipment. Supervisory experience preferred. Valid Alaska driver’s license. Availability to work varying hours, including evenings and weekends as assigned. Supervision

General supervision is received from the Golf Course Manager. Supervision Exercised:

The Superintendent directs and oversees all grounds and maintenance staff and serves as second in command to the Golf Course Manager, assuming responsibility for daily operations in the Manager’s absence. External Visibility

External Visibility:

This position involves frequent contact with golfers, guests, and other Municipal staff and consistent delivery of friendly, courteous, service. Working Conditions

The Golf Course Superintendent primarily works outdoors and is regularly exposed to varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and snow. The role involves frequent walking, standing for extended periods, bending, and lifting moderately heavy equipment and materials. Noise from mowers, golf carts, and other maintenance equipment is common, and safety protocols must be followed at all times. The Superintendent must follow safety protocols for chemical handling, equipment operation, and general maintenance activities. Awareness of environmental regulations and proper turf management practices is essential. The position often requires working weekends, holidays, and extended hours during the peak golf season, with flexibility for early mornings or late evenings to maintain course conditions and support events.
