Job Overview The Senior Phlebotomist will coordinate daily inpatient/outpatient phlebotomy services. Supports the Phlebotomy Supervisors to maintain positive patient identification while procuring venous and capillary blood specimens on all patients regardless of age on a routine and stat basis. Verifies orders from scripts and orders procedures in HIS and LIS. Follows established procedures for patient identification and specimen labeling. Sets up blood cultures and other microbiology cultures. Participates in the training of new employees and students. Applies the knowledge and skills necessary to assess data reflective of each patient's status and provide the care appropriate to the age of the patient served, i.e., infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric.

Qualifications

Required: High School diploma.

Preferred:

Certified Phlebotomy School or training program.

Three years of hospital phlebotomy experience.

Evening shift.

Essential Functions

Resolve patient issues and concerns.

Coordinate data collection for phlebotomy performance improvement indicators.

Coordinate and monitor daily patient satisfaction.

Monitor patient wait time and ensure timely collection of outpatient/inpatient laboratory blood specimens.

Assist phlebotomy supervisor in coordination of phlebotomy student program.

Assist phlebotomy supervisor in coordination of phlebotomy outreach program.

Order and maintain inventory of phlebotomy supplies.

Monitor phones and coordinate follow-up communication with nurses and physicians; document in LIS.

Train and maintain competency when identified as a hazardous materials packager to assist lab staff during emergency preparedness exercises.

Monitor operation of pneumatic tube systems.

Assist phlebotomy supervisor with new employee orientation and training.

Assist phlebotomy supervisor with the development and administration of employee competencies and performance appraisals.

Ensure appropriate phlebotomy staffing levels; find coverage for callouts.

Perform phlebotomy function, including but not limited to:

Maintain positive patient identification from bedside identification, order matching, specimen label printing, bedside specimen labeling, transport and receipt into LIS (100% compliance required).

Collect venous and capillary blood specimens from patients of all ages on routine, times, and stat basis within departmental timelines for completion.

Expected phlebotomy success rate greater than 90%; expected collection rate 8–10 patients per hour.

Stat within 30 minutes; timed within 45 minutes; routine within 60 minutes; specimens returned via pneumatic tube within 10 minutes of drawing.

Accurately accession specimens into the LIS; input patients, test orders, and physician information for testing.

Verify accuracy of test orders vs script requested testing and MD information to exceed customer service expectations and expedite testing and reporting (less than 2 order entry errors per month).

Continuously demonstrate a patient-focused work attitude that supports and improves Patient Satisfaction for all customer groups.

Serve as a role model for patient customer service with scores in the 90th percentile on the survey tool.

Utilize free time between assignments for phlebotomy tray decontamination; specimen delivery to chemistry, hematology, blood bank, and microbiology departments; culture plating; blood culture setup; specimen centrifugation.

Demonstrate a proactive work ethic and promote teamwork between departments and shifts by assisting coworkers wherever possible to complete the patient workload efficiently.

Perform accessioning and clerical duties as needed.
