Through research, public programming, and partnerships, SSAAM brings forward stories that have too often been overlooked, ensuring they are preserved, interpreted, and shared with future generations. Position Overview

The Stoutsburg Sourland African American Museum (SSAAM) is a leading voice in preserving and sharing the history of the African American community of the Sourland Mountain region. As we expand our impact, we are seeking a Community Programs Manager to help bring this history to life through dynamic public programs and partnerships. The Community Programs Manager is a central and highly collaborative role responsible for shaping SSAAMs public-facing work. Sitting at the intersection of education, history, exhibits, and community engagement, this position translates research and interpretation into meaningful, accessible experiences while building partnerships and identifying opportunities to grow programmatic impact and sustainability. This role is supported through a combination of organizational funding, grants, and program-generated revenue, and includes a strong focus on developing and sustaining programmatic resources over time. Key Responsibilities

Program Leadership & Execution

Oversee SSAAMs flagship programs, including seasonal events and signature community gatherings. Design, plan, and implement public programs that reflect SSAAMs mission and interpretive priorities. Develop and manage a comprehensive annual calendar of events and educational offerings. Partnerships & Community Engagement

Build and maintain collaborative relationships with artists, historians, educators, cultural institutions, and community partners. Identify and cultivate opportunities for programmatic partnerships and co-created initiatives. Represent SSAAM in community and professional settings to strengthen regional connections. Revenue & Funding Development

Identify and pursue opportunities for grant funding, sponsorships, and earned revenue tied to programs and partnerships. Collaborate with development leadership to support grant proposals, reporting, and partnership cultivation. Contribute to the long-term sustainability of SSAAMs programming through thoughtful program design and resource development. Program Management & Operations

Develop and manage program budgets, timelines, and deliverables. Oversee logistics and execution of events in collaboration with staff and volunteers. Ensure alignment between programming and SSAAMs broader strategic priorities and available resources. Internal Leadership & Coordination

Chair SSAAMs Education Committee, guiding programmatic direction and integration across initiatives. Collaborate closely with the Staff Historian, Youth Program Administrator, and Tour & Exhibit Manager to ensure consistency across interpretation, education, and visitor experience. Support and guide staff and volunteers involved in program delivery. Qualifications

SSAAM values multiple ways of knowing and encourages candidates with creative, community-based, and non-traditional backgrounds to apply. Bachelors degree in history, education, museum studies, nonprofit management, or a related field or equivalent professional and/or lived experience. Experience in public programming, community engagement, museum work, nonprofit management, or a related field. Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects, partnerships, and timelines. Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills. Experience with grant-funded programs, sponsorships, or revenue-generating initiatives is highly desirable. Desired Attributes
